Strategies for Teaching Vocabulary
Having students
compare things using
analogies will help
because they already
know something and
can compare it to
something new. Use contrast and
comparison for example
does it snow in the
summer, or will it snow
in the winter? This will
allow not only students
to think but also know
the difference.
Work on putting words
into categories. For
example: Spring,
Summer, Fall, and Winter
are all in the group of
seasons.
Have students use technology to
help them find background
knowledge. It can help them with
important words and encourage
them to use concept to get them
motivated.
Having a range of different
reading topics for students
will help students to find
interest that they are into
and help them read more.
Read out loud helps
student read aloud in
the classroom so they
can hear and see the
word. The teacher
can also break the
students into groups
to read out loud. Flash Cards are a great
way to teach
vocabulary and can
always go back to
refresh their memory.
Word Wall is good for
students to have in the
classroom. Each week
have the meaning of the
words that are being
focused on the wall so that
students can look at it as a
refresher.
Amira Reading is a program that
students read a vocab word into a
tablet or chromebook to help them
read. It will say the word then the
student will repeat the word. It
will help students understand
words.
Vocabulary Journal will help the
student write out the vocabulary
word and the meaning. The
student will then be able to go
back whenever they need to look
up the meaning.

When it comes to activating background knowledge and teach vocabulary, they are important because they go along together. From Reading Rockets “Background knowledge helps
students make connections as well as understand concepts.” When a student knows more about a topic, then they will know more information when they read it and be able to understand it. It is important for students to know the vocabulary to support verbal and written communication (Neuman et al., 2023).
When it comes to vocabulary, it plays an important role in the reading process and is significant to reading comprehension (Martha, 2023).
From 7 Beneficial Vocabulary Development Strategies for Kids, “In order for the student to have language development, communication skills, and comprehension skills, they need to have a strong vocabulary base. It is important for an instructor to add vocabulary words to part of the instruction. When you have a strong vocabulary base, it helps with the literacy rate. When technology or multimedia platforms are used to teach vocabulary, it helps students enhance their vocabulary and reading comprehension. Students that come familiar with word, the easier the meaning of the word will be, and students will be able to recognize the word whenever they see it. The way that it improves reading comprehension is by students will already have knowledge

before so it will be easier to understand what they are reading. From Reading Rockets “It doesn’t
matter whether you use an instructional approach or choose to focus on strong words, having a strong base will help with students writing.”
