Term Paper 1 Outline
This major assignment is worth
35% of your final grade
and is to be submitted to your tutor at the end of Unit 7.
The Term Paper assignment provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to implement the knowledge and skills you have acquired in this course. For this assignment, you may choose to complete
one
of the following activities:
o
Option 1:
Prepare an essay that outlines a plan for implementing a working alliance in a workplace or community setting of your choice. The working alliance and workplace or community can be real or imagined.
o
Or
o
Option 2:
Prepare an essay that documents how an actual implementation of a working alliance was conducted in a workplace or community setting.
In either case, the working alliance may be between two individuals or
may involve more than two individuals. The focus of the alliance could
involve a range of subject matter: career exploration, job search assistance, communication improvement, community development, school programming/improvement, and so on.
This assignment requires you to prepare an 8- to 10-page paper that fully analyzes or describes your selected approach. Your examination of an implementation of a working alliance (real or imagined) should be based on the information presented in the course materials or any further readings you have done.
You are advised to discuss your term paper with your tutor before you begin.
Use the outline below to guide the writing of your assignment.
Writing Outline
Context
o
Describe the context in which you propose to implement
a working alliance or in which an alliance was implemented. Briefly describe the setting, the main players involved in the situation, and any other important information that will help the reader understand the situation.
Plan
o
Describe what you intend to do and your reasons for doing so. Clearly state your goals for the alliance, and specify the skills and process you will use to help achieve those goals.
o
Describe how your plan is related to the working alliance literature. Describe how your stated goals, process, and skills relate to the information provided in the course. In this section, it would be useful to include a description of the skill category (or categories) and a few examples of specific skills (described in Hiebert’s 2005 article) you intend to use to initiate the development of an alliance, to reach an agreement on the goals and tasks, and to sustain the alliance. For example, in the beginning stages of developing an alliance, you would use skills for engaging people. An overview could provide the tone for a first meeting: “I am pleased to see a positive response to our call for people to participate in a group effort to revitalize downtown. Today I would like to share a few ideas about how we might orchestrate a project and spend time discussing the goals of this group.”
o
In describing how your plan is related to the working alliance literature, note specifically how the skills in your plan relate to the goals and expected outcomes, using the literature to support the appropriateness of your approach. Explain the basis on which you chose this particular approach as opposed to some other approach.
o
If you choose option 2, use the working alliance literature from the course to analyze the success or failure of the alliance. Comment on how well the development and sustainability of the alliance followed the principles of what constitutes an effective alliance. Describe the stated goals, process, and skills used that either helped to build an effective alliance or hindered the forming of an alliance. Provide a few examples of the specific skills used that contributed to the outcome of the alliance.
Evaluation Plan
o
Indicate how you will gauge the success of your plan. What evidence will you watch for that will indicate how well your plan is working? What evidence would suggest that you should abandon your original plan and try another approach? What will you use as a backup or a “Plan B” if your original plan does not seem to be working? What will be the progress benchmarks? What specific sorts of changes will you regard as evidence of success?
o
For option 2, ask all the same questions above using the
past tense. For example, how did you gauge the success
of your plan? What evidence did you watch for that indicated success?
Maintenance Plan
o
Describe the follow-up strategy you will use to maintain
a strong working alliance in this particular situation.
o
For option 2, describe the follow-up strategy that was used.
