ASSIGNMENT ART PROJECT REFLECTION, DISCRIMINATION & POVERTY WITH THE LGTBQ+ & AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES.
During the Art Project, I chose the topic of Discrimination and Poverty with the LGTBQ+ and African American communities. The sole reason I chose this topic was due to the nature of the job I was working. I have been working in the field of Child Welfare for a few years
and have witnessed on a few occasions the different treatment some get. We are more in-depth with LGBTQ+ and African American families because they are different from the rest of society that we know. We hold them to a higher standard than our counterparts within the Caucasian community. I took the time to speak with a few friends within the community and see what they have witnessed themselves. While looking through the real-time experiences, I also read up on articles and the $2.00 a Day book for more information. During the research, I took a step back to evaluate my own biases to ensure that I was getting the full, clear lens. I was shocked that I had a different mindset with those communities than I thought and would like to admit to. I knew that others were being treated differently, but I did not notice that I was treating them differently. I would hold them to a higher standard because of where they came from, I would require them to do something that I would not require
a white family to do, and I notice the differences in the body language of officials who interacted
with them. Within the welfare system, we make it harder for those who need assistance in the African-American communities because we do not understand the hardships that person might have gone through. We have a stigma that African Americans have multiple babies with multiple baby daddies. Many believe they are just looking for a handout to care for the children they had but could not afford. Many of us want to believe in something we have learned from generation to generation because we are comfortable with it instead of stepping out of our comfort zone to see the truth.

ASSIGNMENT ART PROJECT REFLECTION, DISCRIMINATION & POVERTY WITH THE LGTBQ+ & AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES.
My motivation to dive deep into this topic was to shine a light on it, to educate, and to allow others to sit back and think about it as well. The hardest part of the creative project for me was the creative piece. I was able to pick the topic and research with no problem at all. However,
when it came to getting my topic on paper and drawing what I was thinking was the hard part. I had trouble relaying the thoughts into pictures, and my drawing looked like a fourth grader drew it. When looking at this assignment the School of Social Work chose this assignment to allow the students to portray what they believe that social issue would look like visually. Within our field of study, we see the clients in person and virtually, but it is essential to see what the social issues look like so we can intervene and provide social justice for those who need it. I enjoyed reviewing others' artwork and reading their summary about their project. It was eye-
opening to see the same topic portrayed in a different light. As future social workers, taking the time to see how something is seen through a different lens makes us well-rounded people. This assignment can be tied to anti-oppressive practice from many different angles. This assignment has allowed us to reflect on the research information but also our beliefs, values, and biases. This assignment has allowed us to present the topic on hand to teach others about the issues. So we can eliminate the issues and provide social justice in the appropriate places in the broken system. I was able to learn from my peers and their artist statements the different views and their personal experiences. I had a peer in my group who talked about selling a perfect pair of running shoes for a cheaper price. Providing this opportunity made it accessible to those who struggle with property and might not feel comfortable shopping for those shoes because of the discrimination lens that they will steal them or cannot afford them.
