Critical Response in an Email (15%) COMM2000 (Communicating Across Contexts) Overview: Objective: • In a professional email, write a summary and a critical response that evaluates the impact of an author’s message and use of communication strategies. Course Learning Outcome(s) Assessed: • CLO 1 – Analyze a variety of texts that respond to various contexts. • CLO 2 – Compose written texts that respond to various contexts. Writing Situation: You recently started a new part-time office administrative assistant position at the Royal Bank of Canada to help pay for your education at George Brown College. Earlier this week, the entire administrative team participated in an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) workshop that emphasized the importance of creating a workplace culture that celebrates the diverse, complex, and intersectional identities of employees and clients, and this includes the different languages and Englishes that are used. You learned some surprising lessons from the workshop: • Language, specifically Standard English, can be a form of privilege • When we validate Standard English in the workplace, we risk giving the impression that employees will not be seen or heard unless they use Standard English; this can create an exclusionary workplace culture • There are many valid Englishes The facilitator of the EDI workshop recommended everyone to read Amy Tan’s (1991) essay “Mother Tongue” to learn more about language privilege. Your boss Nava Ahmed, unfortunately, missed the workshop, so she asked you to summarize the most important points of the recommended reading and share a critical response
to the text. Nava wants to know: 1. What was the main message of the recommended text?
2. Why is the main message significant and relevant? 3. Why would you recommend this reading to someone else? To answer this question, select and discuss one of the following communication strategies used in the text:
❑
The incorporation of their unique perspective, social location, or lived experience
❑
The development of a sound argument
❑
The logical structure of ideas
❑
The use of a
compelling story
❑
The incorporation of descriptive details
❑
The inclusion of
logical comparisons/connections
❑
The use of inclusive and
appropriate language
❑
The use of specific examples
❑
The development of an appropriate tone through word choice
Instructions: Write a 250 to 300-word professional email to Nava with your summary, critical response, and any other context you think Nava will need. Apply what we have learned in class about the conventions of a professional email.
