This newsletter is here to help give
you information on how to navigate
the assessments that you will see
when it comes to our English
Language Learners (ELLs). Assessment Types Diagnostic, formative, and summative. Here is what each assessment is
Diagnostic: Helpful for both the teacher and the student. It is an assessment given at the beginning of the year
or when the student is first enrolled to assess their English language proficiency which will help place the student in the correct program. Formative: A great way to get feedback about the students' understanding and how the teacher is doing through the lesson. Formative assessments could include exit tickets, drawing examples, fill in the blank answers, oral answers and so many more!
Summative: How well the students learned the material through the unit. Typically could be a final test or project. Teachers will use this at the end of the unit or end of the school year. ELP and assessment alignment
The English Language Proficiency (ELP) and the different content standards make sure that what the students
are learning are accurately assessing the skills and knowledge the students are learning and the skill they are acquiring. The ELPs provide a prerequisite to the content standards that the students are learning.
Testing Accommodations
An accommodation is a modification to the test to better assist the student. Some testing accommodations that could be put into place for ELL students could be multiple choice answers, speech to text answers or reading the questions out loud to the student, having the test in their home language, open notes, and so many more. Data and Feedback
Data from the test will be used to see where the students thrived in the instruction and see where they struggled. It will help the teacher see strengths and weaknesses to help plan for interventions that the students may need to help them succeed even more. Feedback for students is most important for ELLs as well. Giving students direct, informative, and timely feedback will help push them to focus on the areas that need improvement.
