Use this document as a template and include a single-spaced answer following each question. Follow the word count provided for each question.
1.
Discuss why and how the concept of CQ is relevant to you and your future personal and career goals (100 words/5pts).
CQ means cultural intelligence. It is our level of interest, understanding, awareness, and action as it relates to cultures that are different from our own. Personally, I do not wish to
be blind to the beauty of other cultures around me. CQ is important for me because I want
to be curious, ask the right questions, and have exposure to the cultures around me so I might be a better communicator. I want to go into full-time ministry and reach people in the corners of the world with the news of the Gospel. CQ is essential in communicating the Gospel to people who have grown up in a different culture than my own with different religious beliefs and cultural practices. 2.
Based on your CQ Assessment results and your personal reflection, identify your highest and lowest of the four dimensions. Then discuss your sub-dimensions of strength (high scores) and those areas in need of growth (low scores) within each of the four CQ Dimensions.
(75 words per dimension/40pts).
a.
Dimension with highest score: CQ Drive b.
Dimension with lowest score: CQ Knowledge c.
CQ Drive (75 words/10 points) My highest sub-dimension of CQ Drive was extrinsic interest. Extrinsic interest means that I am driven to learn more about other cultures because of the benefits I might gain from culturally diverse experiences. My lowest was sub-dimension was intrinsic interest. This means that
my CQ Drive is not due to the enjoyment I might gain from culturally diverse experiences.
d.
CQ Knowledge (75 words/10 points) My highest sub-dimension of CQ Drive was
socio-linguistic. This means the vast majority of my knowledge of other cultures comes from knowledge about language and communication norms. My lowest was business. This means that my knowledge of other cultures mainly does not include knowledge about economic and legal systems. e.
CQ Strategy (75 words/10 points) My highest sub-dimension of CQ Strategy was awareness. This means that when strategizing during a cultural experience, I tend to consider sensing the perspectives of self and others during an interaction. My GLST 220

lowest sub-dimension of CQ Strategy was planning. This means that I rarely strategize before a culturally diverse encounter. f.
CQ Action (75 words/10 points) My highest sub-dimension of CQ Action was speech acts. This means that when acting in a culturally diverse encounter, I tend to modify the manner and content of my communication. My lowest sub-
dimension was nonverbal communication. This means that I do not tend to modify my nonverbal behaviors such as tone, facial expression, and body language during a culturally diverse encounter. 3.
How has your understanding of Cultural Intelligence and the realities of interacting across cultures changed during this course? (100 words/10pts)
After taking the CQ Assessment, I believe that I am much more aware of my weaknesses when it comes to cultural intelligence. I know now that although I may have a strong desire to interact with other cultures, my lack of knowledge and consideration when it comes to my nonverbal communication may send a different message to whomever I am communicating with. I now know that I do not tend to plan and strategize before culturally diverse encounters, which might set me up for failure during an interaction. I know what I might need to improve before seeking these encounters. 4.
Discuss the ways you will seek to increase your CQ while you are at LU and in Lynchburg, in your community, or even at home while under quarantine? Give at least 2 specific examples of things you will do (75 words/10pts). (Note that this says DISCUSS not LIST!)
The first thing I will do to increase my CQ while in Lynchburg is to seek conversations with my friends who grew up in a different culture than me. I am very relational, but I tend to gravitate toward people who like me which I am not proud of. There are girls on my hall who are from places all over the world and I plan to have coffee with them before
the semester is over and ask them questions about the way they grew up and their culture.
The second way I will increase my CQ at home in Charlotte is by pursuing conversations at my church. At the church I go to at home, we have two separate couples who are pastors from Peru. I want to share a meal with them this summer to ask them more questions about their culture. I will also reach out to missionary friends of ours on a regular basis to ask them about their culture as it relates also to missions. 5.
How is Cultural Intelligence an important part of telling God’s story? (150 words/10pts)
The Gospel, although widely accepted by most people in my life, is an offensive truth. It is counter-cultural, scandalous, and unpopular. When sharing this truth with people from a different cultural background then your own, it adds a whole new layer to evangelism. They may have a different idea of what “Christian” means or maybe certain aspects of the way that you share it may mean something completely different to them than what you meant to communicate. This is why it is important to understand the worldview and culture of the person or people group you are talking to so you can take that into account when sharing the Gospel. GLST 220
