Discuss two concepts that impacted you the most from watching the Color of Fear and how you might use these concepts in your work in the human services field, especially when working with someone who is a different race or ethnicity than you.
After watching The Color of Fear, I was impacted by the effect of internalized racism. Due to the dominant culture having a negative attitude toward people of color, the people of color are internally impacted both emotionally and mentally. The second concept that impacted me was the concept of white privilege. While I was aware of white privilege, I did not think of how it impacts a person’s daily life
and how many white individuals are unaware of their privilege for simply being white. In my work in the human services field, I would provide a culturally sensitive service using my knowledge
of internalized racism and ensure I recognize and address any signs in myself, staff, and clients. Furthermore, I would make sure I promoted the celebration of all ethnicities to address false narratives learned from internalized racism. For example, “love is love”, and “black is beautiful”. Acknowledging diversity and celebrating the strength and resilience it takes to overcome a culture of prejudice and stereotypes. As a white human service provider, I feel it is important to acknowledge how my views are shaped and be open to learning from those with different perspectives. Educating myself on the history and impact of white privilege and racism would further allow me to advocate for policies to promote equity and empower my clients and the community. For example, acknowledging my client's challenges and resilience validates their experiences and helps them build the confidence to talk more comfortably about their values and goals. I furthermore, would utilize inclusive language by asking for preferred pronouns or pronunciation of their name. Explain how stereotypes can lead to racism, prejudice, discrimination, and microaggressions.
Stereotypes are learned beliefs about a group of people who differ from you. This can be acquired through (limited) information you are exposed to. When a stereotype is negative, it can lead to a poor belief about another group based on their race, ethnicity, gender, or other differing characteristics. Furthermore, this can negatively affect how a person perceives or interprets the behavior of others. A stereotype can lead to prejudice by negatively associating a different group or justifying mistreatment and creating a discriminative belief. A negative attitude or emotion toward a group can harm or exclude the group and lead to microaggressions. Microaggression can intentionally or unintentionally communicate a person’s discriminative emotions through words or actions and negatively impact their well-being.
Discuss how you can avoid stereotypes while being culturally aware as you build skills in cultural competency.
Cultural competency is important as it provides the ability to respectfully interact with people from different cultures. Cultural awareness is being cognizant of differences with the willingness to learn more. The development of cultural competency includes learning about your own biases, being aware of
your interactions with others, actively listening and showing respect for differing views or experiences, participating in or seeking out opportunities to learn more about other cultural traditions, embracing diversity, understanding, and promoting social justice within culturally diverse environments.
