Class Activity #2 Reflection: Non-Verbal Communication Card Tournament
Due: April 4, by 11:59pm (50 points)
NAME: Grace Macurda
Course-Section: GLST 200-001
All bullet point answers should be in complete sentences. Word count is provided for each essay question.
1.
Describe in complete sentences at least 3 thoughts or feelings you had during this activity and what circumstances preceded each.
1.
Once we finished two rounds, I had figured out that the rules at each station were different. My first reaction is that I wished to stay at the station I was because I had mastered those rules and could teach them to others who came. As I got to thinking about my immediate reaction, I realized that this was reflected in my CQ assessment. 2.
Secondly, I felt excited and observant when I did switch groups. I quickly asked, nonverbally, how this game was different than the previous one I had played. I wanted to know the new rules so that I could play the game right. 3.
Last, I felt eager to both explain and learn after awhile. It took me awhile to get excited about both, but once I switched tables I was all in to figure out the new rules. 2.
Describe in complete sentences the forms of non-verbal communication you saw utilized in your group during the activity and what you think they were trying to communicate through them. 1.
One form of non-verbal communication that we used was pointing to different cards.
2.
Another form was making shapes with our hands in the form of letters or using different hand gestures to signify that the rules were different and what they were. 3.
Another form is facial expressions. 4.
Another form we used was example. Me and the other girl who stayed would play out a round for them with certain cards to show them which cards had more value than others. 5.
The last form of nonverbal communication we used was nodding our head for yes and no and exaggerating our movements. 3.
Describe in complete sentences the forms of non-verbal communication YOU utilized during the activity, and what you were trying to communicate through them.
1.
I would attempt to form an A with my hands and point downward showing that ace was lowest. 2.
I would hold up 7 fingers and point up showing that 7 was the highest. 3.
I attempted to make a spade with my fingers and hold it above the deck to show that it beats everything or would play out a fake round with a spade and other cards to show them that it wins
regardless of the suit. 4.
I would point at the players to show them who was to go first or who won the trick. 5.
I would point to other groups and put an x with my hands to show them that the rules they learned before don’t apply anymore. 4.
What did you learn about verbal and non-verbal communication through this activity? (100-150 words)
Intercultural Communication & Engagement
GLST 220
I learned that you can communicate a lot nonverbally! I learned that nonverbal communication is
more than simply how you hold yourself or what your facial expressions says about you. You can communicate virtually anything nonverbally. It simply takes more time to decipher and a deeper level of conversation as well as a drive to want to figure out what the other person is trying to tell you without the use of words. 5.
What did you learn about yourself and the way you respond to communication challenges through this activity? (100-150 words)
I learned that I like to teach others about what I am familiar with, but I am not always quick to step into unfamiliar situations when it comes to cultural awareness. However, when I do step out of my comfort zone and into another culture with a whole new set of rules, I get very excited and ready to learn and observe how the new system works. I would not have guessed this about myself because I am pretty adventurous, but it was convicting to know that I am not as adventurous when it comes to unfamiliar cultures.
