1. Provide a summary of the services that FRYSCs provide, according to the interview. Each FRYSC is individual to the school. So every center will look different based on the schools. Most Family Resource Youth Service Centers focus on what the school needs, and that is different for every school. All centers have a common mission of breaking down barriers to learning. Family Resource Youth Service Centers help with students that are less fortunate. They help give food to students that cannot afford food. They also help with clothing of items that students have outgrown. They do a lot of basic things that may be considered things that are taken for granted. They also do other programs that enhance education. They cartier to schools and find what best fits them. 2. Do the family resource centers collaborate with the community and families to support student education? Cite examples from the interview. The family resource center does collaborate with the community and families to support student education. One example that they are doing is partnering with a local library. They are doing a program called, “Drop Your Drawers.” This is where you can go to the library and drop off brand new packages of boys or girls underwear for children to wear. They also do a program called, “Born Learning.” This is for families with any children and helps them become their child’s first teacher. This also helps families prepare their children for kindergarten. 3. Why are FRYSCs needed? How do their services contribute to the educational mission of schools? Family Youth Resource Service Centers provide programs and resources for what their communities need. Even though the community's needs change from day to day and year to year, the Family Youth Resource Service Center helps them with their needs. They promote physical
and mental health for students. They also provide for families to learn in safe environments. This helps contribute to educational missions of schools by giving students the ability to succeed in school and outside of school. They also help break down barriers of education to make the student environment a better learning space. They also help give opportunities to people in the community that are less fortunate. They help the community with food and clothing if they cannot afford it. 4. Before the FYRSCs opened, teachers often provided support to their students. In his classic book The Thread That Runs So True , Jesse Stuart wrote about providing help to students in a way that still provided the family with self-respect and dignity. Do you think KY Family Resource Youth Service Centers follow that philosophy, based on the interview that you watched? Yes I believe that Family Youth Resource Service Centers provide help to students in a way that provides the family with self-respect and dignity. Family Youth Resource Service Centers helps support the children and families in the community by being kind and does it discreetly. The events that this center offers also gives a positive connotation. They also make it known that the events are here to help you, not belittling.
