Mid-way in the semester, groups will be re-assigned. Parts A, B : Some larger assignments are broken up into smaller parts. The assignment should be handed in as one complete assignment after all parts are assigned. Pages and format : The page limit for each assignment is 1- 2 pages max. (double-sided printing is acceptable, single-spaced, 12- point font size, 11 x 8.5’’ paper size). If you do not keep to these specifications, points will be deducted. Assignments: (see syllabus for assigned dates and due dates) 1) Professional Possibilities: A) View the ASHA Professions Video at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OIcPbndZMo Write a one-page reflection. Thinking questions to reflect upon in your writing: Which professional, setting, clinical population, and clinical tasks resonated with you? Why? What are five new things you learned about the professions from the video? What are five things you would still like to learn about the professions? B) Interview Paper: Begin your search for an SLP, audiologist or Speech/Language/Hearing Scientist to interview. List 1-2 names of people you plan to contact.
2 2) ASHA Organization and Definitions A) ASHA is the premier non-profit professional organization for SLPs, Audiologists and SLH Scientists. It was founded in 1925 and has about 100,000 members world-wide. Go to the ASHA website http://www.asha.org to answer the following questions: 1. What is ASHA’s mission? 2. What types of memberships are there? How can one become a member? 3. Define “CFY” and “CCC”. How does one obtain their “C”s? 4. List and describe the 7 ASHA Actions. Provide at least one example of how each action has been implemented by ASHA. Find and list 5 resources and services ASHA offers to members and to the general public. B) Define the following terms: -Communication -Language -Content, Form, and Use -Phonology -Morphology -Syntax -Semantics -Pragmatics -Speech -Articulation -Fluency -Voice -Resonance C) As a group, discuss and decide which book you would like to read and review as a Book Club (see Assignment #9). Specify the book your group has chosen and outline a schedule to read and discuss chapters, as a group, over the coming weeks in time for that assignment’s deadline . 3) Ethics: Read the ASHA Code of Ethics. Found on the ASHA website: http://www.asha.org/Code-of-Ethics/ Please review the following scenarios (below) and reflect on the ethical issues and violations that are relevant, as per the code of ethics. Make sure to indicate the code and principle # violated. ETHICAL SCENARIOS: SLP: 1) Stephanie, a speech-language pathologist (SLP), writes an evaluation report on a client who was tested by a SLP who unexpectedly resigned and left without writing a report or filing the results of testing.
3 2) Star Therapeutic Corporation contracts all types of therapy services to nursing homes in the rural area. SLPs are required to see a certain number of clients daily. Because of the distance between sites, sometimes only one remote site can be served. To meet her quota, Carol is told to provide services to clients who are seriously ill or in very poor health. Carol does not consider these individuals to be good candidates for treatment. 3) A child with a voice problem was evaluated by a SLP who perceived the child’s voice to be hoarse. She referred him for an ENT evaluation in order to get the insurance company to approve treatment. The ENT will not approve treatment until the vocal nodules are removed surgically. The SLP then re-adjusts the recommendation for voice therapy. AUDIOLOGY: 4) Dave, an audiologist, provides services in a nursing home. The residents cannot be tested in a sound-treated booth due to either physical or monetary (e.g. cannot afford the cost of transportation) limitations. Some residents are fitted with hearing aids based on the hearing test results obtained in the nursing home. 5) Bob, an audiologist, is frustrated with losing clients, who are potential hearing aid users, when he refers them to an Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) doctor for wax removal before Bob can make earmold impressions. Bob decides to begin wax removal himself even though he does not have specific training. 6) A client is being treated for aural rehab services by an audiologist. The client’s insurance plan will cover only four visits. At the end of the four visits, the client has shown progress in speech- reading skills, coping strategy development, and in adjustment of amplification; however, the client has not achieved his maximum function. 4) Language Difference vs. Disorder Watch the American Tongues DVD on reserve in the library or online at this link: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4jrdic Answer the following Reflection Questions: 1. What kinds of dialect differences did you notice, e.g. in articulation, semantics, syntax, pragmatics? 2. How have dialects been used to create stereotypes in the movies and media? 3. What are some scenes that show prejudice against the speech of a particular region, class, or social group? 4. What are some advantages to speaking a standard dialect?

Think in terms of how the disorder would impact the parents, what questions they would have, what emotions would they experience, and how whether or not they were able to easily find information that was helpful. B) Interview Paper: List 10 sample questions you could use for your interview paper. 7) Pseudo-Stuttering Experience In order to gain perspective of how it feels to live with a fluency disorder students will purposely speak to strangers, e.g., asking questions to a clerk at a store, ordering at a restaurant, with a moderate-severe dysfluency. Pay attention to your internal physical, emotional, and psychological reactions, as well as, the listen er’s reaction during those dysfluent exchanges. Additionally, search online for 2 personal blogs on stuttering. Reflect on what you learn about their experience and challenges in living with a stuttering problem. Provide full online references.

Next, watch this TedxGeorgetown talk by Heather Artinian (the 5 year old child in the Sound and Fury film) as an adult: Not the hearing or Deaf world : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhm5OaXJVMQ&vl=en
