How does the use of technology impact the counseling relationship? •
What did you notice about the differences between the live and technology-based sessions? •
Include references from professional literature regarding the impact of technology on the counseling profession and the counseling process. •
Cite specific ACA Code of Ethics sections related to the use of technology in counseling. Distance counseling offers a myriad of benefits for counselors and their clients. Offering care remotely allows mental health providers to reach more people, including rural residents, individuals with disabilities, and those without access to childcare or means of transportation. While there are numerous benefits, distance counseling also poses challenges for the profession. A prominent challenge of teletherapy is the increased potential for misunderstandings due to the lack of visual cues and voice intonations when communicating electronically. Standard H.4.f. of the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics (ACA, 2014) states that counselors must consider how this might affect the counseling process and educate clients on how to prevent and address misunderstandings. The Code of Ethics also states that when using technology-assisted services, counselors must make reasonable efforts to determine that clients are intellectually, emotionally, physically, linguistically, and functionally capable of using applications and that they are appropriate for the needs of the client (ACA, 2014, H.4.C). Counselors must also take additional precautions to ensure that their client’s privacy is not compromised when transmitting confidential information through any electronic means. The terms for technology-based communication can be found in standard H.2.d. of the 2014 ACA ethics code. The COVID19 pandemic has accelerated the professional shift toward telehealth. In response to the growing need for remote counseling, teletherapy has

made significant advancements to ensure standardized and ethical practice. A noticeable difference between the live and technology-based sessions for me was the nonverbal communication. I was able to interpret the body language of the client in the live sessions during residency because we were physically in the same room together. Feeling the same energy in the room does impact the flow of the session. •
How did you demonstrate cultural relevance and convey cultural humility verbally and non-verbally during your role play? •
Include references from professional literature regarding the impact of cultural competence on the therapeutic relationship. According to the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) Code of Ethics, mental health counselors “recognize the important need to be competent in regard to cultural diversity and are sensitive to the diversity of varying populations as well as to changes in cultural expectations and values over time” (AMHCA, 2015). Clin
ical mental health counselors are obligated to continue to educate themselves about their own biases or prejudices and prevent them from interfering with the ethics of their counseling practice. The AMHCA Code of Ethics emphasizes non-discrimination policies and does not condone any form of discrimination among mental health professionals. During this role play I was able to give positive feedback to my client when she mentioned her faith and made her feel comfortable to keep expressing herself. Summarize your self-reflections from the entire role play experience in at least two to three paragraphs. Include your self-observations of: •
Playing the role of the counselor at residency. •
Practicing with your small group after residency. •
Recording and watching a polished role play session this week.

Analyzing and critiquing your counseling skills. I found the role-playing experience to be both challenging and fun. I was extremely nervous to record the session and watch myself practice the counseling skills, but I was pleasantly surprised by my ability to perform under pressure. I think role-playing is an important tool for sharpening my counseling skills and for practicing the skill of creating sound responses in real time conversations. Recording and watching a polished role play session this week was probably the most challenging. With the added difficulty of technology-based counseling, the recorded session made nonverbal communication harder to decipher in my opinion. Playing the role of the counselor at residency was intimidating at first, but I quickly became excited to implement the various counseling skills we were learning about in the course. I felt like my sessions had more intention, versus the first time. The feedback they gave me after every role-play activity was helpful, so I certainly saw the value in it. Overall, I think the residency was an incredible experience that made me more excited to progress in my professional development. I feel more prepared as a student counselor and look forward to strengthening my confidence as a mental health professional.
