Scientist Spotlight (Part 1)
1.
What is the main idea or central message of the text?
The main idea of the passage is to understand the differences between STEM field graduate neurodivergent students' experiences vs. those of neurotypical students. 2.
Summarize the text in a few sentences, in your own words, focusing on the key points.
The text serves to demonstrate neurodivergent graduate students' challenges, how they
overcome those challenges, and how their neurodverence proves to be a strength. Neurodivergenat students feel some sort of pressure when it comes to how they work. These students feel as if they do not belong because they do not fit the neurotypical standards and do not feel as if they are taken into account. 3.
What are the important facts presented in the text? Identify specific examples or evidence the author used to support their points.
-
The fact that neurodivergent students feel they do not belong. The first example is introduced by a neurodivergent student herself, while the second example is from two separate studies which help better understand neurodivergent students feeling a sense of not belonging because of the neurotypical ideals.
“
...the program is a circle, like a chute thing and like some of us are squares and they're trying to press the squares through a circular tube and like not all of us fit. And so sometimes we get left out of things. And we're not included in things because the program and the institution were not built for people like us in mind.” (pg 7, “ As Dolmage (2017) notes, “the ethic of higher education still encourages students and teachers alike to accentuate
ability, valorize perfection, and stigmatize anything that hints at intellectual (or physical) weakness” (p.3). This culture of perfectionism places pressure on students to dedicate all their waking hours to their work as they attempt to meet impossible expectations (Yu et al., 2016).”
4.
What can you infer from the text that is not explicitly stated?
Different types of cognitive disorders and neurodivergence may lead to a different summary. It would be more effective to study individuals with the same diagnosis. Also, why make use of self-diagnosed people when they could easily be making it all up? 5.
What do you think the author's intentions or motivations were in writing this text?
I think the author's intentions in writing this text were to help add to the limited studies done on neurodivergent graduate students and to bring light to certain issues they have to face. 6.
Are there any words or phrases you didn't understand? If so, what do they mean?
Nuance- a subtle distinction or variation
7.
How does this article compare to other information you've read on a similar topic?
This article compares studies done on how individuals with ADHD struggle in the work field not because of their attention deficit but in environment and limitations.
8.
How does this article connect to broader topics or issues in the field?
This article connects to issues such as those of inclusivity and ableism, as for neurodivergent students are underrepresented and do not have the same accommodations a neurotypical person would. Neurodivergent students face a stigma and feel as if they do not belong.
9.
What are your thoughts and opinions on the text? Did you agree or disagree with the author's arguments or ideas? (there are no wrong answers)
While I do agree with the authors ideas, I do not like that the studies were mainly done on white females. I feel as if they should’ve taken a diverse approach, through racial, cultural, and economic background.
10.Can you relate any personal experiences or prior knowledge to what you've read in the text?
I have a friend who was diagnosed with ADHD in middle school. She didn't get treatment and as her condition worsened, so did her academic standing. She would complain about how it was easy for us who didn't have ADHD to concentrate while she would get reprimanded for something she had no control over.
11.Are there any unanswered questions or topics you'd like to learn more about related to this text?
As mentioned, I would like to see this study done on a wider variety of subjects. It would be interesting to see how neurodivergence affects more individuals.
