Southern New Hampshire University COM 405 – Personal Brand Communications Maricarmen Watson 7-2 Project Two
Barriers to Collaborations After reading the Project Team Notes I found out that the team is very diverse, we all have different experience and work styles, something to take in consideration is that they do not share priorities which can definitely create conflict while working as a team; some examples about their differences could be that the “Leadership Representative” Suzanne has 25 years of experience, which means she has her own working methods set, and will most likely not bend to new ideas, Suzanne’s priorities are “Ensuring that the product is innovative and that its execution is timely and on or under budget”, in the other hand we have myself, I am the “Communications Representative” and have only 2 years of experience, open to learn all the new things to come, my priorities contrast with Suzanne’s because I focus more on personal brand and organization’s branding “Upholding your personal brand as well as the organization’s brand and meeting the needs of the target audience”. I can see after reading everyone’s profile that the team might feel a little uncomfortable specially with Suzanne, she is being so long working there and is so practical and old school methods that she might not understand the new marketing digital strategies or what does branding do for the business; The team's inability to approach Suzanne with their ideas, counsel, and observations regarding the project's current status hinders their ability to work together; it can cause disorganization, and not clear expectations, leading to not be able to finish project in a timely manner, or incorrectly.
Codes of Conduct When working on such a diverse group of people, with different priorities, work styles, and working considerations, there are several things that need to be done to overcome the communication barriers, one of those is the Codes of Conduct. According to the IABC website Codes of Conduct “serves as a guide to making consistent, responsible, ethical and legal choices in all of our communications.” (IABC, 2023); These codes of conduct will enhance the teams communication because they will promote inclusion regardless of age, ethnicity, and tenure, which could of course enhance the younger team relationship with Suzanne and make everyone comfortable to freely communicate with each other. Other important codes of conduct we should ensure to follow are the STC standards which ensure we follow ethical principles in our professional activities are “Legality, Honesty, Confidentiality, Quality, Fairness, and Professionalism” (STC, 2023); all those standards are key to have a team bonded and collaborative. Team Dynamics One of the most important steps for a business to succeed is to set up early team dynamics, this will ensure the team feels comfortable working with each other; on the “Team Dynamics” the enterprise lays out expectations, as we read in the article - 10 Simple Ways to Build a Collaborative, Successful Work Environment- “the best way to transition from an individual to a collaborative mindset is to equip each team member for active participation in the group dynamic.” (Campbell, 2017). There are several strategies to create a successful team dynamics,

for example, a team dynamic strategy would make the team feel welcome, positive, and trusting; first setting a “clear and compelling cause” can enhance teams work productivity because everyone would understand the mission statement of the company, second strategy is “communicate expectations”, when a team understand basic standards of the company is much easier for them to succeed on any job assigned “When they have a clear understanding of their position, each team member will work more effectively and without accidentally stepping on another person's toes creating unforeseen conflicts.” (Campbell, 2017); third “Stablish team goals” following the same line as the previous strategy having a set measurable goal can help the team focus on how to accomplish it “The purpose of these goals is to provide team members with achievable wins.”; fourth “Leverage team-member strengths”, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of your team is essential step for the team to succeed, “It is a good idea to have each member take a personality test such as the Myers-Briggs, and hold a team roundtable to share results” (Campbell, 2017); and many more strategies to ensure the team is cohesive, innovative, honorable, sociable, and collaborative. Now we can see how sharing information and feedback can help building stronger professional relationships, information is power and good positive feedback creates trust and enhances performance. To effectively collaborate, something essential to use is emotional intelligence; team members will be able to express themselves and exchange ideas if they possess the ability to evaluate, perceive, understand, and control emotions, it will additionally enable team members to assess whether they are not being very direct or harsh during conversations.
Norm Development “Group norms are a set of agreements about how members will work with each other and how the group will work overall. These agreed-upon behaviors allow the team to increase its collective performance through healthy debate and clarity of purpose and roles.” (Nawaz, 2018). Some collaborate norms to set on my team would be: Set up daily team talks meetings to discuss where everyone is regarding the individual and group projects. For monthly meetings with stakeholders or clients assign a person in charge of setting up a clear and organized agenda. The agenda organizer will also set up rules for team meetings, such as what to do in case of decision making, votes are a good option, say “yes, or no” to add a vote regarding any new project. Norm Justification Each collaborative norm that I chose has an impactful value to the success of the meetings because having a designated person to keep track of the agendas for each meeting provides organization and clearness that the team needs to succeed, the norms allow people to interact and say their opinions in the meetings because they will know in advance the topics of the meetings, and they will be able to actively participate in each meeting without fears of not being listen, or limiting themselves due to others opinions. My chosen norms will support the
team dynamics and effective collaboration because they will enhance the communal spirit in the team, and participation. Norm Introduction The supervisor or manager of the team needs to set up a meeting with the whole team and ask for a volunteer to take care of creating the agendas for each meeting, this will give the opportunity to someone on the team to showcase his/her abilities. Continued Use of Norms The only way to keep a continued use of the norms tracking is to have the volunteered person added on the calendar for the day before every meeting in order to keep them accountable of developing and sending a proper agenda. I believe this norm will enhance the team communication as well because it will provide everyone an opportunity to prepare and participate in each meeting. References Campbell, S.
