2 Angelica Dass's TED Talk Communication bridges cultural divides. Inspired by Angelica Dass's TED Talk on the beauty of human skin in all of its colors, this reflection explores my personal, social, and cultural identity (Dass, 2016). Discovering its impacts on my self-perception and interactions with others and how they enrich communication as well as present unique challenges is worth consideration. My Personal, Social and Cultural Identity I consider myself to have a mixed racial and ethnic heritage that encompasses elements from both Western and Eastern cultures within my family history. Socially, I identify with various communities, which include my racial or ethnic group membership as well as age grouping and professional networks. Culturally, I embody both aspects of family traditions as well as the larger society culture that I live within. My complex network of personal, social and cultural identities has an extraordinary influence on how I engage with myself and the world around me. It fosters an intoxicating internal dialogue where my heritage meets contemporary influences. It also simultaneously presents me with the challenge of reconciling diverse facets of myself while communicating with individuals who bring different viewpoints or backgrounds into play. Impact on Communication My identity is essential in interacting with myself and others. Personally, this has created a deeper and richer self-perception through appreciation of cultural and societal components that compose my identity. These aspects help strengthen me when communicating with others as my varied background allows for an open-minded and empathic communication with people from diverse backgrounds. Understanding their culture, in particular, is very valuable when building connections across difference groups of people.
3 Communication Challenges While my multiethnic background can be an asset in many respects, it also presents unique communication difficulties. One such difficulty arises from managing between different cultural norms and expectations. Sometimes, this leads to miscommunication or cultural insensitivity that I was unaware of. Additionally, there may be moments where I do not fully belong to any one cultural group, creating feelings of identity ambiguity. However, I have learned to see these challenges as personal and educational development opportunities. I aim to constantly hone my communication skills by actively listening, learning about other cultures and respecting the multiple viewpoints present during conversations. Angelica Dass's TED Talk perfectly showcases our skin color as part of a rich tapestry. It teaches that celebrating and accepting each culture's diversity leads to more meaningful communication among individuals, reminding us to recognize all human experiences with empathy and respect for all.
