Surname 1 Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Date The MSW Letter of Intent The core value which I have demonstrated in the past is integrity. Integrity is a social worker’s ability to behave responsibly. One can only behave responsibly if one understands the principles and the values of the role of their profession. I demonstrated integrity during my internship with the Title IV-E internship program. Here, I was given the role of shadowing professional social workers in the Child Welfare system. One way I depicted integrity was when I kept clients’ sensitive information confidential. It was my role to ensure clients’ information stayed private and secure. The other core value I would love to develop more while completing the MSW program is competence. I believe being competent is having the ability to improve one’s professional expertise fully. Besides, I will improve my competence values by engaging in policy practices within the institution and diversity practices that will be vital in overcoming barriers within the healthcare services. The NASW Code of Ethics equips social workers with the skills and expertise while dealing with a diverse population. The Code of Ethics guides social workers to treat every client or patient respectfully and appreciate their cultural features. While working as an intern with the Child Welfare System, I interacted with children from diverse backgrounds. The first experience I engaged in promoting diversity and differences was when I participated in policy advocation promoting equity of all populations. In light of providing care in modern times, racism has been a controversial issue within the social work domain. Individuals get discriminated against based
Surname 2 on their race. Thus, as an intern with the Child Welfare System, I participated in debates seeking to eliminate discrimination and enhance the equity of all patients regardless of their color. The second experience was when I fairly attended to all individuals within the Child Welfare System without favoritism. Each child in the system deserved to be treated and served fairly, and I allowed them to express themselves freely. Homelessness is an issue in social work that deserves more attention than it currently has. I got interested in this issue since it was the one challenge that affected the children I worked with during my internship with the Title IV-E internship program in the children and family services department. Besides, homelessness significantly contributes to poor physical health, malnutrition, and mental health challenges. During my internship, I realized the critical factor negatively affected more than 50% of the children in that system. Most of the children suffered and looked like they had already lost hope. Thus, once I complete my MSW program, I aim to advocate for policies that ensure all children have a safe place to abode. These policies will reduce the ever-increasing number of children within social work who lack homes. I hope that my efforts will give them hope for a better future. Solving the homelessness issue will ensure that all challenges concerning their health are resolved and that they live healthily with hope. I have had several experiences which have highly shaped my decision to become a social worker. Since I was young, I have always wanted to assist others in society. Social work appeared to be the best profession, enabling me to assist many individuals within different domains. Consequently, I grew up with this desire to assist others in becoming better people and overcoming their challenges. In the process, I also experienced other situations that entirely motivated this desire. My internship with the Title IV-E program was a vital turning point for me. This was the first time I dealt with a real-life situation that increased my curiosity about social
Surname 3 work. As an intern, I shadowed the social workers within the Child Welfare System. I assisted many children by strengthening them and their families, providing them permanency, and enhancing their safety. I was delighted to see very many children received help and were now hopeful of having better lives. My interaction with different families and children also identified various challenges within diverse populations. Therefore, I identified different strategies that can be applied to diverse populations. The other experiences which shaped my decision to pursue a Master of Social Work degree at LSU were the COVID-19 pandemic and my pregnancy journey. COVID-19 pandemic led to increased cases of victims as children were mainly affected. Most parents died from the pandemic leaving their children to the harsh reality of the world. Children became homeless, and others had poor health. Such cases increased my desire to help them. My pregnancy journey was also challenging as I worked full-time and sought to complete my field placement. Fortunately, I received help that facilitated my successful completion of my bachelor’s program. However, many other people are having such challenges but lack help. I aim to assist all people in society to overcome all forms of challenges in the social work field. All these circumstances and experiences inspired my decision to pursue Masters in Social Work to gain more knowledge and expertise in this domain. My professional goals are to assist individuals in meeting their needs and enhancing their well-being. I aim to ensure that everyone in my care acquires justice and achieves all their goals. I will mainly focus on people living in poverty, the oppressed, and the vulnerable. This will reduce the increased cases of people needing help in our societies. My strengths include patience, active listening, critical thinking, and improved communication skills. All these skills have enabled me to understand best the needs of all individuals seeking my help within the social work field. Markedly, critical thinking will assist in coming up with effective strategies that will

Surname 4 assist people requiring help. To become an effective social worker, other aspects that I will need to improve my skills on include competency and crisis management. Crisis management will most especially increase my knowledge and expertise in dealing with individuals facing various forms of predicaments. Graduate school is a challenging period; however, with adequate dedication, I will succeed. I will manage graduate school’s academic demands by seeking academic assistance from my professors, time management, and becoming an active participant during class discussions. Consultations and seeking further assistance with my professors will facilitate an easier grasp of the content. During such sessions, a professor will maximumly assist in understanding concepts that I failed to understand during class sessions. Besides, time management will be achieved by setting aside specific times for research and personal studies. Lastly, active participation in class discussions enhances one’s understanding of the aspects taught. These techniques will play an essential role in enabling me to meet my academic demands. As an intern, I will make myself wholly available to an agency to accomplish the set time for field education. I will be available as an intern for four days, Monday to Thursday, every week. I will work for approximately 5 hours on each of these four days. These hours will be achieved by starting work at 8 am and finishing by 1 pm. Following such a schedule will ensure that I meet the necessary amount of time to complete field education. My dedication to this course will motivate me to ensure I meet all the requirements for field edification. Accordingly, I believe that an opportunity to study in the MSW program will assist me in meeting my desire to become a Licensed Social Worker.
