Discussion Prompt #1
Consider how conflict can be detrimental and/or beneficial to a relationship. Give
examples and how it applies to the basic principle of conflict
.
Conflict can be both detrimental and beneficial to a relationship. In some cases,
competition can create a stronger bond between two people and provide an opportunity to
problem solve and learn from each other. For example, two people may disagree about how to
solve a problem and debate the merits of each suggestion. This might lead to a compromise that
can benefit both parties. On the other hand, too much conflict can be damaging to a relationship.
If one person is too aggressive, it can lead to feelings of hurt, resentment, and alienation. In this
case, learning how to communicate without becoming hostile or aggressive is important. By
understanding the basic principles of conflict and learning how to resolve problems peacefully, it
can create a strong and healthy relationship.
Discussion Prompt #2
Consider a friendship that you sustain over long distances. What technologies (e.g.,
phone, e-mail, e-Cards, web pages, chat rooms, video phones, etc.) do you use to sustain this
relationship? Do you use different technologies for different kinds of communication
activities?
Maintaining a friendship over long distances requires much effort and creative use of
technology. To sustain our relationship, my friend and I use phone calls, emails, and text
messages to keep in touch. We also rely on e-Cards to celebrate special occasions and share our
thoughts. Additionally, we have created a web page to post pictures, videos, and other updates.
We also use chat rooms and video phones when we want face-to-face conversation. Each

communication technology has its pros and cons, and we use different technologies for
communication. Through the use of these technologies, we have been able to maintain strong
friendships over long distances.
Discussion Prompt #3
Consider the four guidelines for effective communication in families. Discuss how
you have used or not used each of these guidelines in your family
.
In my family, I have found that effective communication is essential. I have used the four
guidelines for effective communication in my family. I have been honest and open with my
family, sharing my thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. I have worked on listening to
other people and thinking about how they feel and what they think. It is also important to be
patient and not be afraid to discuss difficult topics. Finally, I have learned to be respectful and
understanding, recognizing that everyone has something to contribute. I've been able to make my
family more open and easier to talk to by following these four rules.
Discussion Prompt #4
Watch a television show about a family. Describe how your family is different from
the television show that you watch
.
My family is much different from the television family I watch. We are a blended family;
my parents are divorced and have remarried. I have three siblings from my mom and two from
my dad. We all have different personalities and interests, and our family dynamics are constantly
changing. We don't always get along, but we always work it out in the end. We are a loving and
supportive family, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
