Reflection on the development of academic and professional skill in year one
In this paper I am going to reflect on my professional and academic skills development throughout
my first year at University. I began this course as a mature student hungry for education and a fresh
challenge. During semester two, I found university quite hard as I am currently having family
problems; as a result I had to learn to balance university life, part time job and regular trips back
home (and that is Bulgaria).
At these times, in compound business environment and growing competition, to be able to compete
on the job market you need to possess outstanding skills and be always a step ahead of others. Being
a good learner and constantly developing one's

Actuality getting involved in such type of professional conversations improved my level of
communication and taught me how to behave in a professional manner. Also I would like to say that
communication is a dual practice, you not only get to talk and build on your communication skill
but, you also get to listen and by it become an understanding supportive person. One of the
drawbacks in my communication skill enhancement is that I don't think it works well in UK, in this
multicultural university I have struggled to communicate effectively with students and teachers. This
can be explained by Hoftsede's structure of cultural dimensions (Hofstede, Hofstede, and Minkov,
2010). In his framework he explains the world as complex of diverse nations and people, who act,
think and perform differently (Hoftsede et al., 2010). To overcome this difficulty I was supported by
my colleagues at university.
Team–working
My duties as an assistant manager included a lot of team work. The planning of an occasion meant
that more people will have to work in close cooperation. These duties helped me in the developing
of team–working skills. I have gone even further in improving my skills by engaging in tutorials
which are based on team–work. I used Team Life Cycles to expand my observation and skills on
team–working. The Life Cycle presents clear structure and directions on how teams ought to

Essay about Educational History and Background
Educational History and Background I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I learned everything
I needed to know there. Everything that has to do with life that is. I started my education there and I
will continue it where ever I go. My educational background was just as normal and fun like any
other kids. But I was the unique child that made my education different and more enjoyable. My
learning process has five processes: elementary, middle, high school, college, and the future.
Elementary school started out as a bore but moved on to eventually being fun and enjoyable. I grew
to love school and learning during my fourth and fifth grade years at Zia elementary school. My
teacher taught me the value of history and American History

The teachers taught me well, while my peers taught me more about life. I made my best friends in
middle school and we are a family now. I cherished the time I spent in middle school. I was a top
student who was doing well, had many friends, and was making a name for myself in sports and
extracurricular activities. Then once again graduation rolled around and I had to leave all of the
good things behind. But I was ready to embark on an education that was more geared towards my
future. High school was an easy transaction. I felt like I had the education and maturity level of a
young adult. I knew I could handle all of the work and stress that was going to be dealt out in my
classes. I noticed that high school was a lot like middle school and that I could handle the schedule.
I did not really have any close personal relationships with any of my teachers like I had had in the
past at my other schools. I only really liked two of my teachers out of the four years I was at school.
Both of them were my math teachers for my junior and senior year. The last two years of math I
learned so much that now I enjoy doing math because I actually understand it. The only other
teacher that made an impression on me was my junior year English teacher. She was the only
English teacher I had that actually taught me how to write and read great books. She took the time
out to work with me individually. She gave me the tools I needed to write papers. High

What characterises academic writing?
It is perhaps tempting to think that Academic Writing (AW) is guided by a fairly homogeneous set of
rules and aspects. This is so, possibly because we frequently see books with titles such as Academic
Writing and Writing Academic English, and we hear from fellow students, teachers, colleagues and
friends about the need for skills within written academic English.
However, even if there arguably are core aspects and skills, it is important to acknowledge the fact
that many differences exist when it comes to how certain disciplines grapple the challenges of
writing academic discourse. The question, then, is whether we should rather talk about Academic
Writings, to highlight this heterogeneity.
A General

– Asking rhetorical questions, e.g.
How can this be so? |
On the whole, this means that academic writing is generally characterised by a high degree of
formality. However, the characteristic of impersonal voice, for example, is not without contention.
Even though tables of comparison like the one above can sometimes serve the purpose of
highlighting differences between writing that is more academically oriented, and less formal writing,
which is used in other domains, it can indeed be dangerous to paint such a polarised picture.
We need to remember, for example, that a more subjective and personal style does occur in some
text types in some academic disciplines. Therefore, a table like the one presented above should be
treated with caution and only be seen as a very coarse and simplified view of the characteristics of
academic writing.
Another example of advice given to students on how to write academic English is taken from a
textbook for graduate students written by Swales and Feak (1994). In the introductory chapter, the
authors present six characteristic considerations of academic writing: audience, purpose,
organisation, style, flow, and presentation. When discussing style, they give the following advice on
how to maintain a formal academic writing style.

Examples Of Academic Reflection
During the whole process of designing the IMC plan for HP Sprocket in this semester, I have earned
valuable experience about teamwork, and I have learned lessons not only from class, but also from
the whole working process. First of all, I have to admit that this group is one of the best groups I've
ever had, I used to think that only failed experience helps people learn and grow. However, this time
in a well–organised group, I found that I was wrong, positive experience contributes as well. This
essay will reflect what I have learned, and it will be mainly divided into two parts: academic
reflection and experiential reflection.
Academic Reflection
In an IMC plan, separate segment needs to cooperate with each other through organisational
communications in order to ensure that audiences can receive a same key message from different
channels (Ots and Nyilasy 2015, 134–135). Personally, I feel it is perfectly understandable as a first–
time IMC practitioner. In this group work, because we do not have much time to discuss the "Big
Idea
" at the very beginning, we decided to divide the work first and then combine them together to
find out the "Big Idea". However, I found that I cannot come up with useful strategies without
effectively communicating with my teammates about our goal for this plan. After we have finished
our first draft and uploaded it to Google Drive, we all agreed that this is a weak plan, because the
messages we try to deliver in each piece do not have much in common.
As Percy (2013, 2–3) pointed out, both the key and the goal of IMC planning are "to deliver a
consistent message". This made me think we might be wrong at the aiming stage. In this scenario,
assigning work without figuring out the requirement of an IMC plan is the problem of our group,
and I need to learn that figuring out the main requirements and setting a clear goal are essential steps
for innovative projects like an IMC plan. Because they can improve both individual's task
performance and group's working efficiency (Hoegl and Parboteeah 2003, 4). There may have
certain groups that can perform well without cooperating tightly, like a calculation group, but IMC
group is definitely not one of them. Which reminds me that in the

Reflection On Academic Reading
Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I am a tuned–in Reader, and I appreciate well written
biographies. Enjoyable reading takes my mind off school work and relaxes me. I enjoy academic
reading as well, but sometimes it is intense and requires much concentration. Moreover, I am a
tuned in reader when it comes to academic subject's such as; psychology, nutrition, health and
history. Every spare moment I have; I pick up a book or magazine, and get carried away, by the text.
I visualize the story and its' characters as if, the story is taking place right next to me. Furthermore, I
predict the outcomes of the stories and pose questions in my mind about the characters. I enjoy
reading biographies about famous people like Charles Dickens and Anne Frank. Additionally, I
enjoy reading short stories and magazines such as; Binah, Ami, and Mishpachah. I am fascinated by
the astounding articles in the Ami. For example, the article about a "Journey to North Korea", makes
me feel as if I had experienced it myself. Academic reading gives me a sense of accomplishment and
joy. Generally, I am a tuned in reader, when it comes to reading information. When I am reading, I
analyze and visualize the ideas of the passage. When I stop and think of what I am reading, it
enhances my level of comprehension. My appreciation is also increased, to understand and learn
new information. Furthermore, I enjoy taking my academic reading to a different level, by
discussing and asking questions to my

Essay On Academic Reflection
Education is ingrained in our lives; we are as a society born to learn. The ability to reflect on this
habitual learning is what separates an honors mindset from the average. Reflection occurs
continuously and effortlessly, as though peering into a looking glass. I reflect in order to increase my
potential as a learner and become an honors student. Evaluating my past, present, and future
education ultimately will unlock my fullest potential for true academic reflection.
My past education experience, defined as, elementary through high school
, was filled with
opportunities of growth and promises of success. From elementary to middle school, I was led by a
spark to learn. I wanted to accomplish many tasks, wanted to learn as much and as deeply as I could,
I wanted to succeed with hard work. At this age level, I was displaying a growth mindset, and many
key characteristics of Angela Maiers' habitudes. The most prominent example of this display was
my eighth–grade year as it was the first time I ever truly struggled academically in my life. I was in
my eight–grade math class with Mr. Pfitzner, at the time the bane of my existence, and I did not
understand a thing. It seemed like all my hard work was for nothing, that I would never be able to
overcome this obstacle. For a moment, I was able to see how easily a slip from a growth mindset to
a fixed mindset could be. As I slowly slipped into the fixed mindset, I remember asking myself if
this is how I want to learn. This challenge

My Experience With Academic Writing
My experience with my academic writing it comes from the past years in different classes, that I
have taken here in Texas Tech University. I have taken some couple classes in the science
department, a law class. In my law class I had to write an academic paper, explain the different types
a law that will apply in a wind energy industry. This academic writing was done in the law class, but
that was different from English class. The writing in the science class was little bit like the writing
that was done in English 1301 at South Plains. My experience in the class was to compare and
summaries article that was chosen by the professor. In this class, it helps me to improve my writing
skills little bit more that my high school English. One of my weaknesses in writing is my grammar,
that I will go in depth by going to the writing center and other helpful resources. In 1302 I will learn
more in depth how to write a research paper, so that I can go more in depth on my work and can use
all the different sources on an essay paper. Me intend to build my strength to get better on my
grammar is to make sure that I read aloud for my research or argument paper that will be writing for
this semester. My goal for this class is to finish with a good grade and learn a lot from the professor.
Also, to make sure that I use all help that I get from the class that I will be attending during this
semester.

My Reflection Of My Academic Journey In College
I have changed a lot over the last two years. Relationships and attitudes have come and gone.
However, I have always enjoyed learning. The pursuit of knowledge continues to be important to me
and I feel like I have learned a lot in my college experience so far. My academic journey has shaped
the way I look at myself, my moral understandings, and my view of happiness. In recent years, I
have come to the conclusion that I am most definitely a creator. I enjoyed making items in high
school and earlier, but I have realized in college that it is an essential part of who I am. Furthermore,
to be a good creator, one must be a good critic. In my Honors seminars and other courses, we have
read and analyzed many great works. The knowledge gained

Nothing can be perfect, but I strive for all of my works to be the closest it can get. I know now for
sure that I am creator and it is what I always want to be. I believe I have become a better person
over the last two years. Or, at least, as good as I will get. I have a lot more respect for other people
than I used to. Before, I only surrounded myself with people that I thought would be useful later. It
seems so horrible now. I went to a very large high school. People came in and out of my life at a
rapid pace. There were several people at my graduation that I had not seen in years. I thought they
literally dropped off the face of the Earth or just moved. There was little need to be a good person to
people, because you would often never see them again. Here, I no longer have that luxury. I mean,
that is good. It is now necessary to have a good relationship with people. I think it has certainly
helped to have a group of classmates every year who have a common goal. Another conclusion I
have drawn from my last few years is that every person has a moral obligation to be as
knowledgeable as possible. My biggest pet peeve is stupid people who think they are smart. We are
in the shape we are in today because of these people. I wish people would just admit when they do
not know something. I do. I would never be seen entering a conversation about molecular biology
and acting like an expert. I

Argumentative Essay On Academic Competition
Competition. This word varies in connotation. To some, it symbolizes joy, triumph, and self–
satisfaction, while for others the word represents worthlessness and failure. Since an early age, kids
are taught about competition through games and sports. Kids develop skills like sportsmanship,
integrity and fair play. Competition is like water in a sieve. To argue that competition does not exist
is like saying that water is not leaking from a sieve when only one hole is clogged. Competition is
everywhere. In today's society, there has been a lot of controversy over academic competition in
school. Many see academic competition has a looming rain cloud that hangs over the students who
excel differently, and cannot find success in the standard school system. They see competition as
emphasis on arbitrary performance. Yet, competition is not all that bad. Competition is what helps us
learn and grow as people. If students did not know the difference between a win or lose, then how
would they know where to improve? Academic competition gets a negative connotation
, but in
reality, it has an overall positive impact.
In a recent article, it was discussed how students are experiencing an overwhelming amount of stress
from competition. Students, tired and sleep deprived, dread school not because of the workload, but
because of the academic competition. "While I understand that competition is an important
motivator to many students, I believe that our mental wellness would be significantly

Academic Dismissal Letter
I will start this letter off by explaining my past actions to fully understand where I came from, where
I have gone, and what I have accomplished; since I left the university on an academic dismissal.
First, my success has always and will always be dependent on me. The world is tough place and
being able to be successful in this world is extremely difficult. When I first went to Colorado State
University I had no direction, goals or ideas of what I wanted for myself. I was working a lot as a
minor professional Ice hockey referee to pay for something that I was not truly ready to commit to. I
learned from a young age no one will support you and success is only dependent on you. As I had no
direction and no real understanding of myself to pursue

During this period I learned to improve my work ethic, communication and critical thinking skills. It
expanded my ability to pay attention to detail and think critically in intense and stressful situations. I
officiated at every level even up to the National Hockey League. It was a promising career, however,
during this time I came to the realization I wanted more. It was great to get paid to be in a new city
every single night and only have to work five hours a day four times a week. This did not satisfy my
desire to truly understand the world and to truly make a difference in the world. Hockey was not
intellectually stimulating enough to be able to make a career I would be happy with. Ultimately, you
are doing the same thing day in and day out just with different faces and different names. During
that time period I learned that I like to help people and I like a challenge. During an offseason I
spent a summer down in Peru doing some medical volunteer work. I thought I might want to be a
doctor. What I learned from that experience is I can be thrown into situations outside my expertise;
where I adapt, fight, and

Writing An Exemplary Essay
1. Which parts of your essay do you feel most closely meet the expectations for exemplary writing
as described in the essay rubric and why?
I feel that the two strongest parts of my essay are my thesis and certain parts of my closing
paragraphs. My focus, or thesis, most closely meet the expectations because it offers significant
insight that is precise and creatively stated. It also addresses the content requirements and is fully
supported throughout the essay
. I like the wording I used for the thesis, and to me it's inspirational.
Secondly, I think that certain parts of my closing are strong, particularly the lessons in perseverance
that I learned from Seth. My grammar and mechanics have fulfilled the definition of exemplary in
the essay rubric as well.
2. Which parts of your essay could use improvement, and why?
While there are many parts of my essay that could use improvement, I am only going to focus on a
couple. In paragraph four it feels as though I am rambling a bit about the details of the Domino
Project story. I do think that how the project played out is important, I just

there. Should I take it out completely or rewrite it? I don't like how the last two sentences of my

Academic writing is meant for people to read and learn from it. It can be written with or without
guidelines, as long as it all has a purpose. The most common purpose of academic writing is for the
advancement of education and the better understanding of the topic being discussed within the
writing. Academic writing should be written with the purpose to inform the targeted audience with
informational ideas with solid evidence that supports those ideas. Lab reports are written with these
purposes. However, academic writing could be written with, or without specific guidelines to make
sure the writing follows a certain format. In most cases, they are written with guidelines by
recording new data that is formed by analyzing the results of experiments. Scientists can use old lab
reports as sources to compare their research and support their theories against reports from the past.
Michael Alley, an associate professor from Penn State, described the academic importance of lab
reports. Alley also notes how old reports can serve as archives that we can learn from in the future:
Laboratory reports are written for several production reasons. One reason is to communicate the
laboratory work to management and how it works. In such situations, management often bases the
company decisions on the results of the report. Another reason to write laboratory reports is to
archive the work so that the work will not have to be repeated in the future. Learning from archives
of past experiments

My Academic Journey
Not everyone who attends college takes advantage of the scholastic opportunities available as
students. One reason might be because they have not yet aquired the academic confidence or
perceive education as a priority. Looking back at my adolescence, both of these perspectives were
displayed through my behavior. Nonetheless, the past eight years of my life illustrate major growth
and development as an individual, a family member, a co–worker, and a student–a journey which
led me to this moment. Literally, this very moment! I now possess the academic confidence to
present an analysis of my life's history and academic objectives to a committee of
scholars/professionals, which is unquestionably a significant achievement. Thus, becoming

I recognize all the tools the Navy bestowed upon me. The military provided me with an array of
valuable life skills, such as–but not limited to–leadership/followership, organizational,
communication, and team building skills, which I effectively deployed as a sailor. My intensive
application of these skills eventually led me to being ranked at the top of my peers, and then to
assume the rank of Petty Officer Third Class, which required me to take on various leadership roles
on board both a Naval Destroyer and an Amphibious Assault Ship. The development and application
of my leadership tactics and strategies earned me a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for
superior performance of duty, which emphasized my growth as a leader. Many of the tools from that
life experience transitioned smoothly into the scholarly setting. I have effectively utilized many of
those tools during my pursuit towards completing my educational and career objectives, and I will
continue to apply those tools during my educational pursuit towards creating a well rounded
academic profile. Following my active–duty–enlistment in the military, I developed a list of
educational objectives. In addition, I instantly executed my Veterans Affairs educational benefits,
which allowed me to establish both long and short term educational objectives. Though amendments
were made during my educational journey, my academic path has always pointed in the same

Essay on My Learning Journey so Far
Learning in a Changing World has brought on a number of positive learning experiences. The
knowledge I have gained and theory I have completed through assessments and in class discussions
and tasks has broadened my understanding of learning. It is evident through this text that the
theoretical perspectives focused on in this subject have had a place in the process of my learning
journey throughout the semester. Whether this learning has been learning a new skill for an
assessment, observing learning and assisting teaching on placement or collaborative learning in the
tutorials, it is clear a number of theories tie into these learning experiences.
As I began my journey of learning a new skill which was how to play a song on the piano

I was lucky enough to be placed at Thornbury Primary School for my first week of placement. On
many occasions throughout the five days I assisted students with their work, from small group work
to working one on one with students. At times it was difficult helping student as some needed more
motivation than others, some learnt at a slower rate than others and at times I needed to come up
with strategies to tackle challenges I faced. One challenge was assisting a boy in the class who had
special needs. The class began with their Reading Workshop and first off everyone was required to
read a chapter of their book to a class mate or Pre Service Teacher. Although the boy I was working
with refused to read to me, I began to use a number of strategies to motivate him to complete the
task at hand. Mooney (2013) expresses Vygotsky's concept, The Zone of Proximal Development
(ZPD), it has been articulated in this text that this ZPD is the space among what someone is capable
of without assistance and what someone is capable of with assistance from a peer or teacher. I
implemented this theory with the student, begging with observing the situation and determining
where he was at in his learning process and what he was able to achieve. I began to think that maybe
he was not too confidant to

Reflection On My Writing Skills
Reflection
My writing skills which I have worked on over the few months I have been in English 102 have
changed quite a bit in my opinion. There are many things which I have improved upon that were
amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are
also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level
that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class,
particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things
all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have.
Throughout this semester there are many skills that I have noticed have improved through the
constant writing of essays for this class. The one that I find most noticeable is a habit I had long
struggled with which was essentially my tendency to be over necessarily wordy when writing my
essays. I believe that I was able to somewhat fix this subconsciously, just by knowing that I was no
longer in high school, and could no longer get by with just attempting to fill up my word count. I
also believe I have greatly improved in my topic selection. In high school I would throw caution to
the wind and just pick whatever topic came to mind just in an effort to get it done. I have been much
more calculated in college, and I believe that it has helped me write better essays. While these were

Another Step of a Long Process: Studying English Academic writing is an art of expressing and
transforming thoughts and ideas into physical form to deliver information logically and
scientifically. This skill needs to be refined and practiced constantly regularly. After three months of
taking ESL 273, I have accumulated various experiences in writing advanced sentences and
organizing academic essays which are really necessary for me to perform well in the next English
course, ESL 5, as well as other classes. As a result, I think I am well–prepared and ready for the next
coming course ESL 5. During the ESL 273 course, one of my strengths which is the ability of using

Consequently, I did not have enough time to check and edit some minor errors existing in my essay
"Society Built our Perception and Ability" like verb tense, punctuation, and word form. This also
explains why I usually perform successfully in the grammar tests given by my teacher, but I still
repeat those grammar mistakes again in my essays. Even though those errors do not affect readers'
comprehensions but they might be distracted and thus the quality of my essay would be diminished.
To help students combat this mistake, my teacher has applied an interesting teaching strategy which
is collaborative learning. To do this, I work in pair with another friend and exchange our writing
assignments in order to check other partner's errors. I feel that this method works really well in my
case because checking my partner's mistakes has helped me to reinforce my proofreading skill.
Besides, I find out a strategy to deal with the shortage of time of an in–class writing. To do this, I try
to recheck and go over a sentence as I write to make sure it is free of grammar and punctuation
mistakes. This new approach is very compatible and essential for me in order to be successful when
I get into higher English classes like ESL 5 and EWRT 1A because I actually check my essay three
or four times before I finish it. In ESL 273, I have achieved some specific goals in

Reflective Essay On English 101
Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement.
English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing,
teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and
expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric
, and Research, continued to build
on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and employing
various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader. The course
also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my target audience,
present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and critically
reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows there's
always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and personal
writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much better writer
than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good writer, but a great
writer.
Most of my English 102 writing projects are rhetorical arguments, intended to persuade the reader in
one direction or another. Reflecting on the many skills I honed in English 102, my predetermined
use of rhetorical strategies (ethos, logos, pathos), developing a concise thesis statement, and clearly
defining

Reflective Essay on Writing Skills
I always thought that my writing skills were pretty good until I started this class. It has been thirteen
years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of "refreshing" to do as far
as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did not score
very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to really
improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have forgotten
since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. Writing
is such a major part of communication in this day and age so being able to write an intelligent paper
will benefit you not just through school but also through life. Writing skills are a reflection of
intelligence and I want to perfect my writing the best that I can. Being able to write a quality paper

that I can. The first essay was a persuasive essay on the right for gays/lesbians to marry. I believe
that my first essay could have been a lot better. I think if I had based my paper on the topic
sentences that I put together in the outline my paper would have been a lot better than

Essay on Writing Experience
My Writing Experiences My experiences in writing have been minimal. I have only learned the
basics of writing, like putting together sentences, forming paragraphs with sentences, and things like
that. Since I have been taking college English, I can tell my writing has improved a lot. In the future,
I hope to be able to improve tremendously at writing essays, paragraphs, research papers,
documents, and stories so that I have very little to no errors with drafting and final products. I
predict I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from college. Writing in the past started in
kindergarten. My teacher taught me how to write my name over and over until I could write it with
no errors. All through elementary my teachers taught me

I need to learn to quit thinking as much on what I want to write about and how to write about a topic
and just starting jotting stuff down in outline form as it comes to mind. Run–ons and fragments I
need to be able to spot and fix right away or I really need to not have any in my papers at all. My
goals are to write papers and not have to reassure myself that maybe I need to do more research or
have more data or even have to rethink my whole topic over. I would love to have the knowledge to
be a tutor someday and teach other people how to properly write papers, paragraphs, essays, and
maybe even books. To have excellent skills in writing will definitely be a great advantage in my
nursing profession. In nursing, I will have to do lots of charting on my patients. I will have to do
health presentations on various subjects such as exercising, how our society eats, and sex education
if I want to be a course instructor. Researching information on all of those topics I will have to make
sure I do an excellent job on and collect accurate information and statistics so that I can compare to
other sources. Dictating to the doctor means that I will need to write properly so that he understands
what I am saying. Other nurses will have to be able to understand what I am talking about by my
writing skills when doing shift changes. I will have to be very precise so that other nurses will not
