In our world conflict is an issue no human can avoid. Whether hearing about it through the news or
through a trusted source, or simply just experiencing it in daily lives. Conflict in my definition is
when there is a disagreement or problem at stake and an issue forms. For example a conflict can be
as little as a small argument of opinions or a fight about toys between siblings, to as immense as a
war starting or starvation in certain countries. Conflict can be emotional, or it can be physical, like a
fight. Conflict has happened all over the world. Conflict is what starts wars and can create chaos
among humans. This is similar to the disagreements that took place during a quarrel between the
Native Americans and the non–natives coming into what was the Washington territory. The conflict

The definition of the action to assimilate according to Merriam Webster is "to absorb into the
cultural tradition of a population or group". But in the case of the Native Americans their
assimilation was much more forced. The kids were taken off into boarding schools that taught them
how to become like the white people or the settlers, during this they lost a majority of their culture
and background, relationships with family, and even their language because whenever they tried to
speak their native tongue they were beaten and punished. Each child was given a new name
according to the English culture along with learning English, and even dressing like they would.
These were just three of the many factors that played into the conflict between the Native Americans
and the Settlers. Out of these three factors I believe that assimilation is the most important factor. I
think that this is so because when the settlers attempted to assimilate the Indians the first time a

Conflict Resolution Reflection Conflict is inevitable and occurs all around us all the time. Conflict is
not about whether something is good or bad, but what is important is how we deal with this conflict.
There are many types of conflict and one prominent conflict that I remember in my life is an
intragroup conflict. This was in grade 10, when I and three others were working on a Business ED
project. The conflict was that I had a really good idea and I was expressing my opinion, but my
groupmates were not listening and kept constantly interrupting or calling my idea stupid. This led to
a buildup of a lot of tension between us and therefore affected our teamwork as we ended up not
working efficiently towards our goal of a good mark. The resolution style I used for this particular
conflict was avoidance. This is because eventually, I just let my idea go and just did as the other
people in my group said and suppressed my own opinions. This conflict was left unresolved and
resulted in us getting a lower mark than expected in the project. At this point, I was thinking of just
submitting to their wants and letting my opinions get put to the side. Although I did not act like I
was angry on the outside, like most other avoiding individuals, I built up my anger by not releasing
it, which in the end just went away. Also, I became less verbal and let the other three lead rather than
taking an active role in this project. One advantage of avoiding a conflict is that for a short–term, it
allows us to delay solving and facing the issue, giving us time to think about solutions. Another
advantage is that individuals that avoid conflict tend to help calm the atmosphere down and realize
that the conflict will most likely resolve itself, which was also what I believed for my conflict.
However, this tends to make these individuals deny and avoid the conflict entirely, sometimes
making it even worse. Also, avoiding a conflict leads to the opinions and needs of those individuals
get suppressed, which also happened to me. Avoiding this conflict led the situation to never get
resolved, and because of this, I still do not really talk to those individuals. So, for this intragroup

For this paper, I chose conflict because it is present in nearly every aspect of life, it is unavoidable,
and knowing how to handle it is a valuable tool which I would like to investigate. Webster defines
conflict as "A mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or
external or internal demands", but the reality is there is no clear definition of how conflict starts, no
two conflicts are the same, and they all start for different reasons over different issues. There are
four types of conflict:
Content Conflict – Disagreement caused by differing interpretations of the meaning of a concept or
an idea.
Values Conflict – Disagreements over management practices which may be value based regarding
how employees should be handled and treated.
Negotiation of Selves Conflict – Conflicts over how one see themselves versus how they are seen by
others. Often people see themselves differently than others see them.
Institutionalized conflict – Conflicts that occur due to the structure of a business or organization.
Some businesses encourage conflict as a part of their decision making process. (Lamberton &
Minor, 2014, p.266) Conflict in the work environment is common. Issues like self–worth,
recognition, team dynamics, and compensation; all provide an incubator for conflict. The most

Conflict is detrimental to a group's ability to work together. Although conflict can never be
completely avoided, most personality differences can be worked around if you know how to identify
them, understand how they affect the group and learn methods to avoid them. Thompson, Aranda,
and Robbins (2001) write about two main types of conflict. The first type of conflict is; emotional
conflict, or sometimes called A–type conflict. This conflict can threaten productivity. These
personality types can take over a group. They bully the other members into accepting their point of

team in problem solving. The method is to attack the idea not the person. This type of conflict
usually benefits team functioning. The goal is to turn A–types personalities into C–types. There are

Care should be taken in communicating with other in the workplace. Factors such as anger and

affected by these factors. Another factor could be the environment, such as a meeting, could hinder
communication as reputations and even jobs could be at stake if in appropriate communication is
used. Basically, there is a time and a place for all various types of communication and care should
be taken when talking to our peers and our bosses.
3.2 – Effective Non–Verbal and Verbal Communication
Body Language – This is important as people usually take note of how a person acts and moves. For
example, if a person sometimes scratches their nose when speaking, it could mean to other people
that he is trying to cover something up.
Questioning – Never be afraid to question a person for the sake of your own better understanding of
a subject. It is different when questioning a person's ability or understanding of a subject, which
could result in conflict.

The sources of Conflict The sources of conflict can be basically separated into three categories
which are communication differences, structural differences and personal differences.
Communication differences mean the failure of two individuals to share fully the meaning of a
communicative attempt. It is arises from semantic difficulties, misunderstandings, and noise in

goals, personalities, value systems or other factors.

This mechanistic view approaches conflict resolution as a logical, linear process. Robbins

In the 1950s the emerging human relations view of conflict began to replace the earlier traditional
view. The human relations position suggests that conflict is a natural phenomenon in groups and

management literature introduced the term conflict management (Nurmi & Darling, 1997); and, by
the 1970s, the field of organization development, with its tool–kit of team–building interventions,

Conflict means a struggle or problem between two opposing groups or individuals. There are two
types of conflict: internal and external conflict. An internal conflict is a struggle that is internalized

Ship Trap Island. As Rainsford gets challenged by Zaroff, he says, "'Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a

Rainsford faces many situations where he has to choose between life or death. Lastly, examples of
conflict can be shown in "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry. This story is about a cute couple that is
willing to do anything to buy each other Christmas presents. An internal conflict faced by Della
Young, the protagonist, is when she does not have enough money to buy her husband Jim a present.
All Della had was "one dollar and eighty seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas" (O.
Henry 153). To get more money, Della sells her most prized possession, which is her hair. After
Della and Jim finally bought their presents by selling their most prized possessions, another conflict
arose. Della bought Jim a chain for his watch, and Jim bought Della hair combs that she

Conflict is a serious disagreement or argument that can happen often. The result of a conflict
depends on how high the situation escalates. Me and my little brother get into conflicts pretty often
over dumb things. Usually when my brother and I get into a conflict we get in trouble for fighting

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT – my experience
There isn't anyone in this world who do not face conflicts. Conflicts arises everywhere in everyone's
life, whether be it the home or work place or within one's own mind. No one can avoid conflicts. So
we are left with only one option and that is "how tactfully we handle these conflicts".
Disagreements and uncertainties are natural in any conflicts. Different opinions and perspectives
begin to emerge. This may arise because of a number of reasons like competition for resources, dis–
agreement over goals or responsibilities, poor communication, power struggles, or fundamental
differences in values, ethics, attitudes, and personalities.

I do follow avoidance sometimes but ultimately i am left with unsolved conflicts, which brings me
back to either compromising or accommodating or competing level. But avoidance sometimes helps
me in a big way as it gives me sufficient time to consider, re–think and then act.
I take my time, believe in open talks & try to resolve the conflicts as soon as possible so that i can at
peace.
Conclusion:
Conflicts can be both positive and negative and should be encouraged in work place till a certain
degree so as to make the individuals and groups come out of their comfort zone and work on the
Zone of concern. The moment the conflict crosses the zone of concern, it becomes a big problem. It
has to be handled immediately then or else it can be destructive.
It ultimately depends on us as to how we perceive the conflict, whether we take it as an opportunity
or a threat. We cannot control our emotions, our ego, our anger, but we can definitely find out the
best measure to resolve the conflicts. It is well said by M. Esther Harding that "Conflict is the
beginning of consciousness."

Over the past year's Mr. Diamond we have had problems with disagreements and conflicts between
our employees. I believe it is imperative that we work at helpful solutions and attempt to stop the
conflicts, and limit them as much as possible. I will now present to you my proposal on what the

I feel if something is not done to correct this situation, there will be things said that will not be able
to be taken back, and someone may lose their job in the process.
As you know there is substantive conflict that can occur in just about any issue, but its moving force
is that the two parties simply disagree about an issue. This can be a good thing or a bad thing.
Handled correctly parties in this type of conflict can create for themselves and those around them,
the ability to resolve an issue with something creative, something better than either party's original
position.
While substantive conflict, if handled correctly, can be very productive, personalized conflict is
almost never a good thing. There are several reasons. First personalized conflict is fuelled primarily
by emotion (usually anger, frustration), and perceptions about someone else's personality, character
or motives. When conflict is personalized and extreme each party acts as if the other is suspect as a
person. Second, because personalized conflict is about emotions and not issues, problem solving
almost never works, because neither party is really interested in solving a problem. In fact, there are
times when things may be come worse. Third personalized conflicts almost always get worse over
time, if they cannot be converted to substantive conflict. That is because each person expects
problems, looks for them, finds them, and gets angrier.

humanity has to do something to don let conflicts transform in war. Conflict may be solved; but it is
hard to control the destructive of a war. 2. There are different theories that seek to explain why
humans still fight in war. Some of the individual, state and global level theories of conflict are based
on: Human Nature or Individual Leaders, States' Internal characteristics, and Global Level System
(Turetzky lec 11). Human Nature arguments for the causes of war are based in Sigmund Freud idea
that "aggression is simply part of human nature that stems from humans' genetic programming and
psychological makeup." Realists also "argue that violence is a product of bad human nature" and
that there is not anything to eliminate this bad human habit. I believe that it is true that humans'
nature is composed with an instinct of violence (War). However, society has a lot to do with the
expansion of this bad habit. Today aggression is embedded in everything, which enforces our
acceptance and practice of violence. Obviously, as realists argue, it is almost impossible to eliminate
this bad habit from human nature. In contrast, the individual Leader arguments blame the state
leaders for wars. However, we can't blame a country's leader for war. The author Stoessinger, stated
in his book that a state head's perceptions are decisive in war (Stoessinger 65). I believe that a
