1.
What is the specific problem with communication?
I am working on a group project at work. We must create a
PowerPoint and give a demonstration to the entire team on
the benefits of Certificates of Deposit. We divided the work
and have been working on our portions throughout the week.
English is a second language to the other group member and
our writing styles are very different. We have been sending
each other emails with the information and data collected, but
our rough drafts are completely different and don’t combine
well.
2.
Does the problem represent an example of one of the
barriers that the articles that Dr. Rani and Lumen
Learning identify? If so, which one(s)?
Yes, the problem represents a language and cultural barrier
between me and the other group members. Although the
group member can speak English the grammar and flow of the
information is confusing and lacks the quality to present to our
peers. Presenting my concerns could also create attitudinal
and behavioral barriers if it’s not presented well. When both
parties are putting in equal quality work it can feel like a
personal attack when the work is questioned.
3.
What are some possible communication strategies in
notifying someone about the problem?
I could start by emailing the group member to set up a time to
meet and go over the project. I could also call her and speak
with her on the phone to let her know my concerns. This would
lead to us creating a plan of action to fix the problems. I could
also suggest that we have a working lunch so we can have
time to build more of a connection and get to know each other
a little better. If those options don’t work, I could also reach
out to our manager with my hesitations and explain the
situation.
4.
What is the best course of action for you to take in
solving the problem?
I think sending an email to set a specific time to sit down and
create a more definitive outline would help us get on the same
page. Then we could meet twice a week to combine our
information and make sure we are both comfortable with the
rough draft. This would prevent information from being
repeated or misconstrued. It would also help us still meet our
deadline as we are falling behind without a solid rough draft
done. Creating an outline and meeting twice a week would
solve the problem as we can both edit together and talk in
person to correlate our information.
5.
What is the best way for you to communicate this
problem to the relevant individuals?
Making sure to set aside time to work in person, not through
email or phone to show that my concerns are genuine.
Communication and empathy can get lost in email compared
to in person delivery. Taking the time to listen to the other
group members’ concerns and evaluation of the project would
be helpful in creating a team atmosphere. Making sure to use
be encouraging and supportive of our differences in a
respectful manner to prevent behavioral and attitudinal
barriers from developing.
