SEARCH and SHARE Chatting: In Person or Online Student Name: Class: ...... Date: Teacher: Find an article about how friendship has changed since Facebook, Google+, and Twitter have become so popular. The article: Karimi, A. (2013). Web Mediated Communications: Positive and Negative Effects. https://www.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:1309213/FULLTEXT01.pdf Read the article, print it out, and be prepared to discuss it with classmates. Author: Ali Karimi Publication: DIVA-portal Length: 83 pages Publication date: 2013 What's the main idea?
The main idea of the article is that social media has changed the way people interact with each other, and how they form and maintain friendships. The article explains the positive and negative impacts of social media sites on the formation of interpersonal relationships. How many sources were quoted? There were ninety sources quoted throughout the article. These sources were peer-reviewed journals and studies from the past decade. Were there any illustrations? What kind? The article has few illustrations; the primary ones were charts which visually demonstrates two potential outcomes of using online communication to form relationships. This charts serves to help emphasize the points that are discussed in the article in regards to the advantages and disadvantages of web-mediated communication. What did you learn from this article? I learned that although social networking has offered us the ability to connect with old friends and family, it has also created a level of detachment and distance from face-to-face interactions. Furthermore, it is important to maintain a “balanced” use of these websites to keep friendships healthy. The most interesting part of the article for me was the list of positive effects social media can have on relationships. Despite the potential for negative impacts, these sites can also be used to strengthen old relationships as well as form new ones. What was the most interesting part for you? Why? The most interesting part of the article for me was when the author talked about how web- mediated communication can put pressure on individuals to present themselves in a certain way
as it has created a culture of editing and control. This was eye-opening to me and provides insight into my own social habits, as well as those of my friends. Which do you like better, the way friendships were before social networks or the way things are now? Why? I prefer the way friendships were before social networks as I think there was more meaning behind the relationships that were forged and more time was given to getting to know someone. I think that prior to the rise of social networks, there was more of a connection between individuals as they were able to give their full attention to another person and truly immerse themselves in that particular relationship. Write five new vocabulary words, idioms, or expressions related to the article. 1. Web-mediated communication – communication between two or more parties through the use of the internet. 2. Interaction – two people exchanging contact and ideas. 3. Physical contact – coming into direct contact with another person. 4. Instant messaging – a real-time online communication tool allowing users to have conversations with multiple people. 5. Editing – altering words, pictures, or thoughts to change the way something is presented. How would you rate the article on a scale of 1 5, with five being the highest? Why? I would rate this article 4/5. It is an insightful and well-structured article that explores different sides of the impact of web-mediated communication on interpersonal relationships. The article is fairly detailed and effectively makes its main points clear. While the argument could be further

strengthened by citing more sources and providing more illustrations, it was still thorough in its approach and touched on many important aspects.
