Interview Assignment
1. The Lauer-Tyson interview: Themes in the Lauer-Tyson interview.
a. Themes in the Lauer-Tyson interview:
The struggle with addiction.
The interview shows what it is like to suffer from addiction. Tyson discusses his
addiction and the challenges he experienced in conquering it. "I didn't feel good to these folks
knowing I received those shots," he adds. He also discusses how tough it was for him to stay
clean and how he had to fight hard to be sober. He also states that "Living a sober life is difficult.
Nevertheless, smoking a joint is not."
The Difficulty of Recovery.
Tyson talks about how difficult it is to stay sober and how often he has relapsed. He
claims, "I'm not sure whether I like this sober person. He is agitated." Also, he describes how his
AA meetings go. He says, "I won't live if I do not seek treatment," indicating how challenging it
is for him to recuperate. According to the idea of systems, one person's actions impact the entire
group (Northrup and Sumway 270).
The role of therapy and support.
Surname 2
During the interview, Tyson emphasizes the importance of therapy and support in his
recovery process. He talks about how therapy helped him to deal with his emotions and traumas.
He says, "that is my serenity" about AA meetings. He also mentions the support he received from
his family and friends. He also mentions that he started the "second act" with his wife and she
gives him “cayenne pepper after ODing.
b.
This is a semi-structured interview because Lauer has a list of prepared questions, but he also
allows Tyson to elaborate on his answers and share his personal experiences. The interviewer
however, tries to maintain a “casual quality one would find in unstructured interviews.”
Importantly, Lauer demonstrates “credibility, dependability” in his way of interviewing
(Northrup and Sumway 272). Through this interview, it is clear that every word is important.
c.
One celebrity I would choose to interview on their battle with addiction is Demi Lovato.
Lovato has been open about her struggles with addiction and mental health issues, and her
honesty and vulnerability could provide valuable insights into the themes of addiction, self-
blame, and the role of therapy and support.
2. The Kroft and Walters interviews: Grade the interviewer
Based on Berger's description of the interview process, I would give Steve Kroft and
Barbara Walters an A for their interviews. Both interviewers used qualitative methods, which
sought answers by examining different social settings (Briones et al. 39). In the Kroft interview
with the Clintons, questions were clear and he allowed the President to speak at length. He did
not interrupt or argue with him. Similarly, in the Walters interview with Monica Lewinsky, asks
for examples and amplifications from the interviewee.
