As I reflect on my experience in the course, I am struck by the significant growth I have undergone in my understanding of special education, both in practical terms and from a biblical perspective. Firstly, my understanding of special education has transformed, encompassing a more comprehensive view of the diverse needs of students with disabilities. Through engaging discussions, thought-provoking readings, and practical exercises, I have gained valuable insights into various instructional strategies, assessment methods, and support systems tailored to meet the individualized needs of students with disabilities. This holistic understanding recognizes the importance of addressing academic challenges and learning's social, emotional, and behavioral aspects, creating a more inclusive and supportive educational environment. I now understand the importance of implementing differentiated instruction to accommodate diverse classroom learning styles, abilities, and interests. This approach involves adapting teaching methods, materials, and assessments to meet the unique needs of each student, fostering an inclusive learning environment where all learners can thrive. I have come to appreciate the significance of effective collaboration among educators, parents, specialists, and other stakeholders in providing comprehensive support for students with disabilities. Open communication, teamwork, and shared decision-making are essential in developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and other support plans. My understanding of special education has expanded beyond academic instruction to encompass advocacy for the rights and inclusion of individuals with disabilities in society. I now recognize the importance of advocating for equitable access to educational opportunities, promoting student self- advocacy skills, and fostering a culture of empowerment and acceptance. Regarding my biblical understanding of special education, this course has deepened my appreciation for every individual's inherent value and dignity, regardless of ability or disability. Through discussions on inclusive education, diversity, and social justice, I have been reminded of the biblical principles of love, compassion, and justice that underpin the call to serve and support those in need, including individuals with disabilities. Scriptures such as Psalm 139:13-14 Psalm 139:13-14 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well (The Holy
Bible, 2024). Affirming each person's uniqueness and purposeful creation resonates more deeply as I reflect on the importance of inclusive practices and advocacy in special education. In conclusion, my experience in this course has broadened my understanding of special education, equipped me with practical strategies and lessons, and enriched my biblical perspective on serving individuals with disabilities with compassion, dignity, and inclusivity. I am excited to apply these newfound insights and skills in my future work in special education. Reference: The Holy Bible. (2024, May 5). Psalm 139: 13-14 NIV - - Bible Gateway.
