Interviewer: Haley Holder Date of Interview: 1/19/2024 Grade Level Teaching/Taught: Pre School Years Teaching: 3 years Name of Teacher: Cassie Roberts Name of School: Blair County Head Start Interview Questions Interview Responses 1.How did you prepare to become a teacher? Cassie prepared by getting a degree in Early Childhood Education and taking professional development classes. She also stated she prayed and asked God for direction before she began her process of becoming a teacher. 2.Describe an attitude that effective teachers possess. Cassie said that effective teachers have patience towards their students. She also stated that it is important to have a positive attitude for your students social/emotional needs, physical needs, cognitive needs as well. 3.What is a difference between an expert teacher and a novice teacher? How can a novice teacher become an expert in this area? Cassie said the difference between a novice and an expert teacher is experience and professional development. A novice teacher can become an expert through experience, being open to change, asking questions, and having the desire to learn. Page 1 of 3

Cassie said you are held accountable by creating lesson plans that reflect standards and frame work through constant evaluations. We are also held accountable for creating and evaluating through individual goal plans; altimate the standards of the Head Start program. 5.How do standards and assessments impact your teaching? Cassie said that standards and assesments are important to determind where a child is at and where they need to be. The constant evaluation can be overwhelming sometimes when the need for “proof” is expected over the quality time that natural teaching and learning can happen. 6. Why is knowing your students backgrounds important? Cassie said that it is extremely important as knowing their background helps you to individualize learning plans as to what they are capable of or what resources they have. If someone is emotionally drained, knowing that you would need to meet their emotional needs first before their mind could be opened to learning. 7. What is important to keep in mind when choosing curriculum? Cassie said that when chooing curriculum it is important to do research to make sure that the curriculum meets the standards of the goals of the program standards. You also want to choose a curriculum that suits your teaching style. Page 2 of 3

Cassie said that the result is that every child has the same opportunity to equal learning. It is important that every child sees that their peers may not learn in the same form or fashion that they do. It gives the teacher an opportunity to individualize and be creative on their teaching stratagies. 9. How can problem solving be difficult in the classroom and how do you overcome it? Cassie said that problem solving can be difficult because every child comes from different backgrounds and home life. It can be difficult to understand what is acceptable in their personal lives. To overcome it you have to set ground rules in your classroom and stick with them. Creating a classroom family and how to treat one another is essential. 10. How can you meet the needs of all of your students when lesson planning. Cassie said when lesson planning you need to take into consideration the individual goal plans of a few focus children. When focusing on a few children each week you can individualize a lesson plan to suit all students needs. Reflection: What are the 2 most influential pieces of advice provided to you in the interview? Write a paragraph of 3–5 sentences reflecting on your interview. During my interview with Cassie I found that recognizing my students needs is very important. By recognizing my students needs, it not only provides support for my students but helps me to become a better teacher as well. I also found that knowing my students backgrounds and what I can do to help them to succeed in school is important as well. This is important for helping students balance their school life with their home life and teaching them what is acceptable at school. Page 3 of 3
