But what he does not know is that this event will trigger a massive climate shift that will affect the world population. Meanwhile, his son Sam is with friends in New York City to attend an event. There, they discover that it has been raining non-stop for the past three days, and after a series of weather-related disasters begin to occur all over the world, everybody realizes the world is about to enter a new Ice Age and the world population begins trying to evacuate to the warmer climates of the south. In the opening sequence of the film (Clip 1), Jack, the climatologist, risks his life to retrieve the ice cores his research team is collecting in Antarctica. What’s so important about ice cores to climate studies that he would take such a chance? The ice is a tool for the climatologists to measure climate change 2. What causes the disaster at the Antarctic research outpost? The shelf the ice was on broke apart 3. Have similar events in Antarctica happened in real life? (You’ll have to do a little additional internet research on this one.) In January 2023 around 600 square miles of ice broke from Antartica to form a new iceberg. 4. Jack tells the delegates at the conference that global warming can affect ocean circulation such that it paradoxically causes global cooling. Is there any real scientific basis for this statement, and if so, what? While it’s true that the temperature of oceans can effect global temperatures, the idea that the changing circulation of the ocean would cause cooling instead is most likely a falsehood.
EES 0836 5. The weather station in the UK (shown in Clip 3) records sudden drops in ocean surface temperatures in multiple places in the North Atlantic. Based on what you have seen thus far (in class and in the previous clips), what do you think you are supposed to conclude is causing that temperature drop? The ocean temperatures are dropping, meaning there will be a global cooling. 6. What disaster did it actually resemble? The disaster resembled a tsunami. 7. What else was completely unrealistic about the water crashing through the Manhattan streets? (Hint: Watch the motor vehicles.) It is likely that the water would wash everything away, not just surround it. 8. Temperatures plummet, snow begins to fall, the floodwaters freeze, and Jack’s son Sam warns that anyone who goes outside will freeze to death in the approaching storms that bring on the new Ice Age (spoiler alert: they do). This all happens in the course of a few days. Do you think this climate change shift is realistic on this timeline? Why or why not? No, an ice age won’t just hit in days, it is a gradual thing that takes centuries to cycle through. It’s known that the earth is exiting an ice age still to this day, and it started 3 million years ago. 9. Duke University paleoclimatologist Dr. William Hyde described the film as follows: “this movie is to climate science as Frankenstein is to heart transplant surgery.” What do you think? I think that’s an accurate statement, it completely disregards the nature of the earth, and the point I already mentioned that we are still exiting an ice age is very important considering the earth isn’t due for another ice age for 100,000 years at the earliest.
