CIVL 430 – Design of Concrete Structures Syllabus 2023/2024 v1.0 Instructor Dr. P. Adebar, PEng adebar@civil.ubc.ca Lectures Mon., Wed., Fri. at 8:00 – 8:50 am in FSC 1005 First class: Wed. Sept. 6, Last class: Wed. Dec. 6 No classes: Mon. Oct.9 (Thanksgiving), Mon. Nov. 13 and Wed. Nov 15 (Mid-term Break) Extra class: Thurs. Oct. 12 See Course Schedule for further details Tutorial/Laboratory Sessions Fri. 10:00 – 12:00 noon or 1:00 – 3:00 pm Tutorials in CEME 1005 (CIVL Design Studio) on most weeks – TA’s available to assist with assignments, projects and quiz preparation – attendance voluntary Laboratory sessions only on certain weeks – attendance mandatory Online Office Hours will be scheduled as needed. Course Objective As a required course for all Civil Engineering students, CIVL 430 has two high-level objectives: (i) to serve as a foundational course (to CIVL 433 and CIVL 513) for anyone that will work in structural engineering design or a related field, and (ii) to provide a minimum level of fundamental knowledge about concrete structures for anyone working in a different field of Civil Engineering. List of Topics Concrete Structures Structural Design Materials – Concrete & Reinforcing Steel Development, Anchorage & Splicing of Reinforcement Design of Short Columns Subjected to Axial Compression Flexural Response of Structural Concrete (initial linear response; flexural cracking; introduction to prestressed concrete; cracked linear stiffness, deflections; reinforcement yielding, flexural strength; flexural resistance of rectangular sections, T-beams, members with compression reinforcement) Diagonal Cracking (one-way and two-way shear strength of members without transverse shear reinf.) Design of Footings Analysis of Continuous Bending Members (review from CIVL 332) Design of One-way Slabs Simplified Shear Design of Slender Beams Design of Beams Analysis of Short Columns Subjected to Axial Load and Bending
Team Work A considerable portion of the course work will be completed working in teams. The primary purpose for having teams is to minimize the individual workload while maximizing the design experience and laboratory experience. To minimize the administrative burden on students, the CIVL 430 team structure requirements is aligned with the team structure in CIVL 445 – students self-select teams of six members . This allows students to have the same team as in CIVL 445 if they wish. Any submitted team list that has less than six members may be combined with additional team members, which is how you request to be assigned to a group. To prevent the same team members from taking a leader or follower role for all tasks, each deliverable will require a different designated team leader and all members of the team will be required to report their contributions and to assess other team members, including the team leader. Deliverables and Examinations Mark Dist. 1 Online (weekly) Review Quizzes 10% Term Work (Design Projects, Laboratory Projects, Other Tasks) 40% Mid-term Examination 10% Final Examination 40% 1 Mark distribution shown only applies to students that achieve a passing grade on examinations; otherwise, the final grade is the combined examination grade (mid-term examination 25%; final examination 75%). This means someone with a very high term work mark and very low final examination mark may not pass the course. The reason for this is to ensure all passing students have put effort into preparing for the final examination. Textbook (optional) The recommended textbook (not required; but very useful for anyone that will work in structural design) is: Cement Association of Canada (CAC) Concrete Design Handbook, 4 th Edition, 2015 . This handbook includes CSA Standard A23.3-2014 , the Commentary to CSA A23.3, and textbook chapters on the design of concrete structures. The book must be purchased from Orderline.com. https://www.orderline.com/concrete-design-handbook-fourth-edition The regular price is $230 (plus tax and shipping), while the special student price is $181 (plus tax and shipping). You must call Orderline Customer Service at 1-888-361-0003 to get the student price. Shipping one book to the UBC area is estimated* to be $24.85, thus the total price for one book is $181 + 24.85 + 12.28 (tax) = $218.13. Shipping 10 books is estimated* to be $38.29, thus the price per book reduces to $194.38 for a large group order. (* estimates provided by Orderline)
Professional Conduct Students are expected to adhere to the highest professional standards at all times, including when they communicate or interact with their classmates, the course TAs and the Course Instructor. Academic Honesty and other UBC Policies and Regulations It is expected that all fourth-year UBC students are fully aware of the university policies and regulations, which can be found here: http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/index.cfm?tree=3,0,0,0 In particular, students need to be fully aware of the policy on Academic Honesty and Standard . Academic honesty is essential to the continued functioning of UBC as an institution of higher learning and research. All UBC students are expected to behave as honest and responsible members of the academic community. Failure to follow the appropriate policies, principles, rules, and guidelines of the University may result in disciplinary action. If a student has any questions about the academic standard in this course, the student must consult with the Instructor. In no case should the student submit any work or participate in any activity that they are not certain meets the required academic standard. In the Faculty of Applied Science, all cases of suspected academic misconduct must be reported to the Dean’s Office for a formal investigation.
