Queensland University of Technology QUT EGB373: Geotechnical Engineering EGB373: Geotechnical Engineering 2 WEEK 10- TUTORIAL QUESTIONS shear strength -1 (Direct Shear Test) Q1 . A series of direct shear tests were performed on soil A and soil C. The peak shear stress values and the corresponding normal stresses (in brackets) were tabulated below for each sample. In order to answer the question, you should plot the following data on graph papers (attached with this tutorial) using equal horizontal and vertical scales. A C Test 1 76 (102) 6 (23) Test 2 141 (195) 16 (62) Test 3 273 (379) 33 (120) (a) Estimate the friction angle for each soil. (b) What can you say about soil A and soil C Q2 . A direct shear test on undertaken on a stiff clay sample with an initial normal stress of 80 kPa. The sample was fully saturated. The shear box has internal dimensions of 60mm x 60mm. The test is undertaken at a very slow shear rate. A peak shear load of 116 N was achieved during the test at a shear displacement of 5.3 mm. (a) Determine the peak shear stress. (b) Determine the normal stress at peak. (c) Assuming that the sample cohesion is zero for slow loading, compute the maximum mobilized friction angle. Q3 . A direct shear test on specimens of fine sand gave the following results: Normal stress (kPa) 100 177 215 Peak shear stress (kPa) 46 81 100 Determine the value of (angle of internal friction) after plotting shear stress vs normal stress values on a graph paper (attached with this tutorial). Also determine the shear strength of the soil at a depth of 5m from the ground level. Assume unit weight of soil = 19.5 kN/m 3 .
Queensland University of Technology QUT EGB373: Geotechnical Engineering Q4 . A direct shear test on specimens of silty soil ( d = 1.25 g/cm 3 and w = 25%) gave the following results: (a) Determine the value of (angle of internal friction) and c (cohesion) of the soil after plotting peak shear stress vs normal stress values on a graph paper (attached with this tutorial). (b) Would failure occur on a plane with a mass of this silt (the same density and water content) at a point where the shear stress in 122 kN/m 2 and the effective normal stress is 246 kN/m 2 . (c) The silt soil is loaded to have a total normal stress of 385 kPa at a point. The pre- water pressure at this point is 120 kPa. Under these conditions, what is the effective shear strength of the of the soil at this point? 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 -20 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 160 180 200 n =200 kPa n =100 kPa n =50 kPa n =25 kPa Shear stress [kPa] Shear displacement [mm]
