Amatullah Shahid Group 3 12/9/2022 Introduction Melting of a pure solid occurs at a higher temperature than melting of a mixture or impure solid. Substances that are not the same when added to a solid can disrupt the repeating pattern that is displayed by the crystalline solid. These forces once held the solid together. The impure mixture now requires less energy to melt the solid that is surrounding the impurity. That is why the melting point is lower for an impure solid. On the periodic table of elements, the group 1 atoms the melting and boiling points decrease as one continues downward. This is because as the forces between the atoms decrease, so does the melting and freezing points.

Amatullah Shahid Group 3 12/9/2022 Procedure When beginning the experiment, set up the digital thermometer to record the temperature once per second. There will be a choice of fatty acids, lauric or stearic acid. Choosing one acid weigh out approximately 5 g of pure solid to a tube. Weigh the fatty acid appropriately. A thermocouple is going to be inserted into the tube and then the tube will be clamped to a beaker of water. Make sure the water is boiling. The data collection of the temperature should begin once the solid has melted. Use tongs to remove the hot tube and utilize a ring stand to clamp the tube to the ring stand. A cooling wire will be used to agitate the solid as it cools. Monitor to see at what temperature the solid begins to precipitate. Make sure to record the temperature where it first begins to precipitate. After finding out how much mass is needed, add the mass of the second fatty acid to the tube. Then repeat the melting procedure. This experiment is completed with 4 trials. To dispose of the fatty acid mixture, apply heat to the mixture and remelt the mix. Applying hot soapy water while scrubbing the tube removes the residual solidified fatty acid.

Amatullah Shahid Group 3 12/9/2022 Conclusion There are a few manipulations would could do that would result in a misstep or error. The first one not measuring the proper concentration and then causing the test tube to become overfilled. The next source of error is not taking into account the eutectic and making a graph where the numbers are too wide in range. The mixture of the fatty acids shows variable melting points. The confidence interval is 95%. The eutectic is 19 for the samples.
