Kennedy Jones CHE 104 Professor Brock 30 January 2024 Weekly Reflection #2 In the mystery powder activity all of the white substances looked about the same. Other than seeing the texture of them it was hard to be able to tell them apart from each other. I feel that the overall meaning of this activity was to be able to take the powders that you do know what they are and try to figure out the unknown powders. We did this by performing an investigation. In the context of grade-level teaching I think introducing this to a fourth grade level class the investigation could be successful. I think that this grade is a good one to use because fourth graders are independent enough and able to grasp the knowledge of what they are learning. They also would be able to handle the powders without making a huge mess. For this experiment you have to use droppers, a candle, matches, and different solutions. I do think that it would help for me to walk around and help them use the matches and anything else they might struggle with, but I do believe fourth grade is a good one for this activity if monitored correctly. For my personal thinking about the properties I felt that salt and sugar were good because of solubility so they dissolved in the water. I felt that baking soda was good because it was reactive. I think the property that would not be useful would be the flour because it causes no reaction. I think that for the measurement activity that fourth grade would also be an appropriate grade to do this activity. In this activity we learned how mass and volume are measured. For this activity we used a balancing pan, nuts, clothespins, bolts, pennies, etc. The first standard that this
activity aligns with is, “ Standard units are used to measure and describe physical quantities such as weight, time, temperature, and volume. (NGSS Crosscutting Concepts, gr 5)” This activity allows students to experiment using the 2 -pan balance to understand the concept of measurement/weight. The second standard that this activity aligns with is “Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. (CCM K).” This activity works with different objects and compares their weight. Since I picked fourth grade I feel that a standard for 5th is preparing them and a standard for kindergarten should be a review of what they should already know. I think a difficulty I could see with students in this activity is understanding the concept of mass and volume. As a future teacher I plan on breaking down the aspects of both of these topics to ensure my students are about to understand them.
