Please show all your work for all math problems in the spaces indicated below. You may use the periodic table linked on the Task page to assist you. You may type your work or print this sheet, show your math work by hand, and then scan the sheet back in for submission if you choose. 1. Define the following terms: a. Law of Conservation of Mass: states that matter cannot be created or destroyed but it can change forms. b. Molar Mass: the mass in grams of one mole of a substance, either an atom or a compound. c. Mole: unit of measurement that is used specifically with really small substances (like atoms). 2. Determine the molar mass of NaCl: 58.5g a. Show the work you used to arrive at the answer here: Na 1 * 23g = 23 g Cl 1 * 35.5g = 35.5g 23g + 35.5g = 58.5g 3. Deterine the molar mass of H 2 SO 4 : 98.1g a. Show the work you used to arrive at the answer here: H 2 * 1g = 2g S 1 * 32.1g = 32.1g O 4 * 16g = 64g 2g + 16g + 64g= 98.1g
4. 2 Na + Cl 2 2 NaCl a. Using the above reaction, determine the total mass of the reactants: 117g i. Show the work you used to arrive at the answer here: Na 1 * 23g = 23g *2 = 46g Cl 2 * 35.5g = 71g 71g + 46g = 117g b. Using the above reaction, determine the total mass of the products: 81.5 i. Show the work you used to arrive at the answer here: Na 1 * 23g = 23g = 23g Cl 1 * 35.5g = 35.5g 23g + 35.5g = 58.5g * 2 = 117g c. Do your answers verify the law of conservation of mass? Why or why not? Yes, the total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of products 5. 2 H 2 O 2 2 H 2 O + O 2 a. Using the above reaction, determine the total mass of the reactants: 68g i. Show the work you used to arrive at the answer here: H 2 * 1g = 2g O 2 * 16g = 32g 2g + 32g = 34g * 2 = 68g b. Using the above reaction, determine the total mass of the products: 68g i. Show the work you used to arrive at the answer here: H 2 * 1g =2g O 1 * 16g = 16g 2g + 16g = 18g * 2 = 36g O 2 * 16g = 32g 36g + 32g = 68g c. Do your answers verify the law of conservation of mass? Why or why not? Yes, the total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of products
6. A scientist performs an experiment in a lab. He mixes 15 g of Chemical A with 34 g of Chemical B to make the compound AB. According to the law of conservation of mass, how many grams of product (AB) should be produced? A + B AB 15g 34g ? 49g
