How much solid waste does the average human in the United State produce each day? Where does most of the solid waste that we produce in the United States end up? 4.3 pounds each day. Most of the waste ends up in landfills. 2. Why are landfills becoming less of an option for disposing of solid waste? Landfills contribute to air and water pollution. 3. How do landfills contribute to air pollution? How do landfills contribute to water pollution? Methane is one of ten air pollutants produced by decomposition at landfills. A liquid known as leachate forms in landfills. Leachate can enter underground and surface water supplies and pollute the waters. 4. According to the video, what makes up the biggest part of the solid waste that we produce? What is an alternative to sending these solid wastes to landfills? 5. What is the difference in biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste? List 3 examples of biodegradable waste and 3 examples of non-biodegradable wastes. Biodegradable waste can be broken down naturally through the process of decomposition. Non-biodegradable waste cannot be broken down naturally through the process of decomposition. Biodegradable wastes: Food, wood, paper. Non-biodegradable wastes: Glass, plastics, metals.
