Week 5 Discussion Post Regent University GENE 202: Making of The Christian Leader Professor Daniel Castellucci November 23, 2023 In the film “Defiance,” the opening scene of the Jewish refugees with downtrodden faces, sets the stage of the dire circumstances and harsh realities of their situation. Despite the downtrodden faces and the immense challenges they face, Tuvia Bielski and his leaders demonstrate leadership practices that enable others to act and encourage the heart in the face of such overwhelming adversity. Enabling others to act is a key leadership practice that involves fostering collaboration, building trust, and empowering others to contribute their skills and strengths to the collective effort. Within the film, Bielski and his leaders exemplify this practice by organizing the refugees into a community. At the beginning of the film, Bielski gives reassurance and confidence to the Jews by saying “we will start rebuilding the lives you have all lost™ (Zwick, 2008). He also was able to install confidence within the Jews by getting them involved in gaining new skills. Such as learning how to repair a gun, shoot the gun, sew, read, etc. “Leaders are always there to help people find the courage they need to do things that they have never done before” (Kouzesv& Posner, 2021, p.135). Kouzes & Posner states that “Collaboration can be sustained only when you promote the feeling that “were” all in this together” (Kouzes & Posner, 2021, p.130). Which is exactly what Bielski did, when he encouraged the people. Additionally, “The fastest way to change someone’s mind is to connect with their heart” (Groeschel, 2021). “Leaders give heart to others by recognizing individual contributions and celebrating victories together” (Kouzes & Posner, 2021, p.135). Bielski emotionally connected with the hearts of the refugees., when he made his welcoming speech and stated “this is the happiest day of my life, seeing you here amongst us” (Zwick, 2008). Bielski’s statement had a powerful and uplifting effect on the people. Causing their facial expressions to change from one of despair to one of admiration. In that moment, I believe they felt a sense of relief and safety. In my own life, I have witnessed the practice of encouraging the heart during a volunteer project. Our team leader regularly expressed appreciation for our commitment and dedication to the cause. They took the time to personally thank each team member, highlighting specific contributions and expressing gratitude for their efforts. This not only made us feel valued and motivated but also fostered a sense of friendship within the team. In conclusion, the leadership practices of enabling others to act and encouraging the heart, as demonstrated in “Defiance™ and discussed in the Kouzes and Posner text and the Groeschel video, are essential for creating resilient and empowered teams, particularly in challenging circumstances. Tuvia Bielski and his leaders exemplify these practices through their actions, providing real-world examples of effective leadership in the face of adversity.
