Leadership Case Problem A: Suzanne Expects Results Suzanne is a new manager in a software development company. She is very focused on results and getting things done, but she doesn't seem to be very good at understanding and responding to the needs of her employees. In one particular instance, Suzanne is meeting with Hank, one of her employees. Hank is having trouble meeting a deadline, and he tells Suzanne about it. Suzanne immediately jumps to the conclusion that Hank is not working hard enough. She doesn't take the time to understand why Hank is having trouble, or to offer him any support. In which leadership trait or characteristic does Suzanne seem to need the most development? Suzanne seems to need the most development in the area of empathy . Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It is an important leadership trait because it allows leaders to connect with their employees on a personal level. When leaders are empathetic, they are better able to understand and respond to the needs of their employees. In the case of Suzanne, her lack of empathy is evident in her meeting with Hank. When Hank tells her about his trouble meeting the deadline, Suzanne immediately jumps to the conclusion that he is not working hard enough. She doesn't take the time to understand why Hank is having trouble, or to offer him any support. A more empathetic leader would have taken the time to understand Hank's situation. They would have asked him why he was having trouble meeting the deadline, and they would have offered him support. By doing so, the leader would have been able to build a stronger relationship with Hank, and they would have been more likely to help him succeed. How would you rate Suzanne’s level of emotional intelligence? I would rate Suzanne's level of emotional intelligence as low. She seems to be very good at controlling her own emotions, but she's not very good at understanding and responding to the emotions of others. In the case of Suzanne's meeting with Hank, her lack of emotional intelligence is evident in her response to Hank's feelings of stress and frustration. Suzanne doesn't acknowledge Hank's feelings, and she doesn't offer him any support. Instead, she simply tells him to work harder. A more emotionally intelligent leader would have acknowledged Hank's feelings, and they would have offered him support. By doing so, the leader would have been able
to build a stronger relationship with Hank, and they would have been more likely to help him succeed. How might she have displayed more emotional intelligence in her meeting with Hank? Suzanne could have displayed more emotional intelligence in her meeting with Hank by doing the following: Acknowledging Hank's feelings. When Hank told her that he was feeling stressed about the deadline, Suzanne could have acknowledged his feelings by saying something like, "I can see that you're feeling stressed about this deadline." Ask for more information. Suzanne could have asked Hank for more information about why he was feeling stressed about the deadline. This would have helped her to understand the situation better. Offer support. Suzanne could have offered Hank support by saying something like, "I'm here to help you in any way I can." Identify a couple of specific aspects of emotional intelligence in which Suzanne might improve? Suzanne could improve her emotional intelligence by focusing on the following areas: Self-awareness: Suzanne could improve her self-awareness by paying more attention to her own emotions and how they affect her behavior. Self-regulation: Suzanne could improve her self-regulation by learning how to control her emotions in a constructive way. Empathy: Suzanne could improve her empathy by learning how to understand and respond to the emotions of others. Social skills: Suzanne could improve her social skills by learning how to build relationships with others and resolve conflict. How would you assess Hank's display of emotional intelligence? I would assess Hank's display of emotional intelligence as high. He was able to express his feelings in a clear and direct way, and he was able to listen to Suzanne's feedback without getting defensive. He also showed empathy for Suzanne by understanding her need for results. Hank's display of emotional intelligence was effective in this situation because it helped him to build a positive relationship with Suzanne. It also helped him to resolve the conflict in a constructive way.
