Recommend an implementation strategy for the new L&D program When considering the implementation strategy for the retailer, if I were to go by the directions of the prompt and choose only one, then I would have to go with outsourcing. Because of the specific need for a coder and the experience that is needed to make corrections on the fly, this is hard to find quickly and even harder to possibly train internally. This may not be the most economical choice initially, but in the long run, the organization stands to save money by keeping the system up and running efficiently. Now, if I were to give my true opinion, I would say that the answer should not be resolved to a single strategy but must be a multi-pronged approach. Initially, the organization should outsource the work to get the process up and running and establish a baseline of what the system should look like. While this is happening, the organization should be looking internally to see if there is anyone currently on staff that can be trained to maintain the system. Should there not be anyone or a specific skillset not present or easily trained, hiring someone would be recommended. The ultimate idea would be for the organization to regain control of the system in the future. Skills, Facilities, Products, and Services When it comes to the company that I have chosen, United Parcel Service (UPS) is already a strong and established player in the market. My suggestion for increasing revenue or market share would be one that they are already doing and that is continuing to expand into the healthcare logistics market. One area that they will need to continue to expand on to be successful in this market would be through the adoption and implementation of AI to help with optimization. The delivery of healthcare products can be tricky and there are more regulations
and needs when it comes to this market. Hospitals cannot have a batch of vaccinations delayed by a day or two thanks to the inefficiency of the delivery company. Using AI to help optimize routes and monitoring the deliveries can help get the right items to when and where they are needed most. Another area they will need to expand into is facilities and vehicles. There are many products in healthcare that must be maintained at a specific level and the delivery company must be able to provide this from end to end. If the facilities cannot run consistently or if there is a shortage of appropriate vehicles, then it could not only cost money, but possibly even lives. Lastly, UPS will need to look at increasing or training current drivers for these deliveries. Whether it be by plane, train or automobile, they must have employees that are properly trained and/or certified. Buy, Build, or Ally The smartest strategy that UPS can take would be a two-pronged approach of buy and build. There are many small, independent companies that provide medical delivery, and they already have some of the necessary infrastructure in place as well as understanding the delivery in their specific areas. By buying these organizations, UPS can then start to support them within that market. (On a side note, it would be wise for UPS to allow the name to remain, to maintain the brand in the eyes of the customers) On the other side, UPS will need to build some additional infrastructure in and around the markets they have bought into or plan to expand into.
