2 Reflection: Importance of Data for Informed Organizational Changes In this task, I researched the financial structure and data from Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center. I then compared the financial structure and data with a neighboring organization. The neighboring organization that I analyzed was Scripps Health, and I looked at their annual financial statements, payer mix reports, and cost structures. These were reports that I was not familiar with, so it took me a bit of time to familiarize myself with the types of data and information that I was seeing. I found that Kaiser has an integrated system that combines the provider and payer roles. This type of system can allow for more control of costs and direct reinvestment in improving the facility and in direct patient care factors. In contrast, the Scripps Health system is more traditionally based and relies on a mixture of patient revenue streams. This indicated to me that the Scripps Health facility might have different financial pressures than the Kaiser Permanente facility. Another aspect of Kaiser Permanente that I learned about is its spectrum of services that are offered and the hospital’s standing on the Care Compare website (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, 2024). This site publicly reports information from the Quality Payment Program performance evaluation when it is available for clinicians, doctors, groups, and accountable care organizations (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, 2024). In this task, I learned about financial reports and financial structures of healthcare organizations, how to research to find these, and then how to read and understand them. I used the data from these financial reports and from the Care Compare website to then learn what types of informed decisions could be made for the healthcare organization of interest. It is extremely important to use data when making decisions that can impact organizational change and affect the healthcare system because the lives of patients are at stake.
