RTV3405 Apple’s “Scary Fast” Event Coverage From Marques Brownlee and Quinn Nelson On October 30, 2023, Apple held their “Scary Fast” event, where they unveiled new chips for their computers, along with new MacBook Pros and iMacs (Apple, 2023a). The new chip, the “M3” is based on a new 3 nanometer processor, which is reportedly significantly better than the traditional 5 nanometer processors in performance and power efficiency (Apple, 2023b). The event was shot and edited on iPhone and Mac, and live streamed for influencers and news reporters to watch (Apple, 2023c). The event was covered by major news sources like NBC, CNN, ABC, as well as new digital news sources like the Verge and MacRumors. Additionally, coverage from tech YouTubers and Twitter influencers contained many important updates and details as the event occurred. These forms of media all covered the topic in a similar way, although the more modern, digital sources were often more brief and concise about their findings. Marques Brownlee’s Perspective As a tech influencer with almost 18 million subscribers on YouTube, Marques Brownlee makes tech-related videos under the name MKBHD. On Twitter, he has made a name for himself by releasing information about technology products as they are being released, and sharing his thoughts and opinions on them. In his Tweets, he shares often relatively unbiased, but still opinionated information about current tech events ranging from Apple events to other phone makers like Samsung to other genres of technology like phone accessories, camera gear, cars, and more (Marques Brownlee, n.d.). His engagement is high, and he has a strong following within the technology community. Additionally, Marques Brownlee is a professional Ultimate Frisbee player, so his feed sometimes also consists of clips and information about his Ultimate
Frisbee team. On Twitter, he is followed by many well known technology brands and other technology influencers that share the same kind of information as him. Quinn Nelson’s Perspective Contrastingly to Marques Brownlee, Quinn Nelson has just over 1 million subscribers on YouTube making videos under the name Snazzy Labs. His videos are often focused on slightly different features and more “underground” information and products. He often makes videos about off-market and DIY technologies, making his target audience slightly different from that of Marques. While still high quality, the videos Quinn Nelson have a lower production value and target a smaller audience. He advocates for consumer right-to-repair and consumer power. His videos are researched, and are as unbiased as he can make them (Quinn Nelson, n.d.). Discussing the Event Both Quinn and Marques watched the event live and tweeted information and their opinions on the products and features announced. While Marques focused on the colors, improvements, and positive aspects of the Apple keynote, Quinn highlighted some of the skepticism around the new features and performance improvements of the new chips announced. They both discussed the features and benefits of the upgrade, and both concluded that the upgrade of the new MacBooks are probably not beneficial for consumers who already own an M-series Mac. While they expressed very similar opinions in their Tweets, the quantity and subject of the tweets are differing.
Figure 1: Number of Tweets Made (with and without photos) As shown in Figure 1 above, we can see that Marques tweeted much more, and significantly more Tweets with photos. I believe this can be attributed to the fact that Marques has many more followers and a significantly higher engagement rate than Quinn on Twitter. Additionally, since Marques has a higher Twitter presence, it makes sense that his engagement should follow that trend. There are some anomalies in the data, however this can be attributed to the Twitter algorithm. Conclusions Both Marques and Quinn represent similar ideological perspectives on the Apple event as tech influencers, but approach it with slightly different perspectives. Both of them Tweeted during and after the event, largely discussing the benefits of the new technology announced throughout the keynote.
