BUS621 Week 1 Discussion 1 / 1.18.2024 What stood out to you most about this exercise? o The most fascinating realization for me was the comparison between my completed Inventory skills survey and my self-assessment as a leader. This quantitative method provided a fresh perspective, motivating me to delve deeper into enhancing my proficiency in working with ideas and concepts . While my strengths lie in Human skills, I aspire to be more confident in talking about the ideas that shape my current organization and the intricacies involved (Northouse, n.d., p. 58). This exercise helped me understand the importance of grasping the big picture and adjusting my mindset to actively develop my conceptual skills. This realization is a crucial milestone to reaching my future successes and goals. What were your highest scores in; Technical, Human or Conceptual Skills o My highest score was in Human skills, highlighting my strengths and confidence in collaborating with peers and managing employees. As a Technical Supervisor, a significant aspect of my role involves engaging with peers and employees to create innovative solutions for complex issues. Recognizing the distinction between leadership and management motivates me to cultivate all three skills, aiming to excel inti the well-rounded leader I aspire to be. This mindset is integral to achieving specific goals for my team in my current role and ensuring it remains an organized and efficient operation. How does this Skill Inventory help you in understanding your own leadership style? o The skills inventory reaffirmed my strengths in Technical and Human skills and highlighted Conceptual skills as an area where I need further insight. I have always found myself being identified as an emergent leader which aligns with my strong Human skills, attributed to my effective communication and collaborative skills.
Week 1 Discussion 2 / 1.18.2024 Share an example of a leader you feel empowers others. What are some traits that stand out in terms of leadership and empowerment? Be sure to include how they empower and what others could learn from their example. Do you feel that you have to be in a leadership role to lead? Your discussion post should be 250 words. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, stands out as an empowering figure and powerhouse leader. He has demonstrated a transformative leadership style that focuses on empowering employees and fostering a culture of inclusion and innovation. He makes it a part of his personal mission statement to aim for socialized leadership concerned with the collective (Northouse, n.d., p. 15). As the Northouse text describes , socialized leaders transcend their own interests for the sake of others (Howell and Avolio, 1993) . Satya is frequently known to encourage employees to embrace challenges and have no fear of learning from failures. When I solicit unfiltered feedback from employees, I consistently discover that our meetings produce the most valuable/innovative ideas. Satya has been known to encourage employees to seek opportunities for personal and professional development. His emphasis on a growth mindset empowers individuals to take risks, be creative, and continuously evolve in the rapidly changing technical industry. His motivational speeches, coupled with his exceptional cognitive abilities and personality, have inspired me to incorporate these attributes into my daily interactions with my team. Additionally, Satya continues to lead diversity and inclusion initiatives at Microsoft. According to a CNBC news article, since Satya has been CEO the company has made significant strides in promoting diverse applicants. As a woman of color, it is inspiring to see this as I currently work in Tech. It’s important to note that every attribute I’ve highlighted of Satya are things that anyone can do in their teams without being a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
