1 Session 1: Journal By: Halle Ross Colorado Christian University BUS-474A Prof Kathleen Benton 10/15/2023
2 Session 1: Journal In order to become the best possible leader and person I can be, I must first be able to recognize the values that guide my life. If I am clear about what values are important to me, I can be a better leader to others and Christian. So, what do I truly value in my life? What do I care so deeply about that requires me to speak my truth and transform the lives of those around me? Some values that come to mind are integrity, respect, communication, humility, authenticity, ethics, accountability, and servitude. I grew up in a Presbyterian church that my parents attended, and was deeply impacted and inspired by the principles and values I was shown by going there. As a Christian, I would like to think I put others needs before my own 100% of the time. Being a good Christian and an effective leader means being a servant of the Lord by serving our fellow friends, family, and coworkers. It is not until I became a follower of Christ and dedicated my life to Him at the age of 10 that I really considered what was important to me. 1 Peter 4:10-11 says "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord” (NIV). I vividly remember reading this verse as a child and thinking to myself, I want to be of service to others, I want to help people. As I continued to grow my spirituality, I learned how important serving others is to God. Part of the reason I went into a career in the healthcare field is because I wanted to be of service to others. I wanted to improve their lives and help solve the
3 problems they are facing. This is a huge motivator for me at work and inspires me to be efficient at my job as a healthcare administrator. Another value that I often practice both at home and at work is compassion. Being a mother to my daughter has been the greatest blessing I have ever received, and has taught me how to be more compassionate towards others. Being a mom, I feel every pain my daughter foes and every joy she encounters. When she is sad, I am sad. When she is happy, I am happy. I love her fearlessly with love I never knew existed other than God’s. Compassion is something I value. Compassion promotes meaningful relationships with others and Heps facilitate problem-solving. Humans are meant to be social and thrive in communities with others surrounding them. We must act with compassion towards one another in order to drive meaningful interactions and live purposeful lives. Using compassion in stressful situations can help us respond more lovingly and effectively. It encourages us to be kind to others and put their needs before our own. This is the true meaning of being a Christian. With all this being said, I hope to explore more of what values are important to me and how they impact my life. I really want to examine how they impact my life at home, school, church, work, and more. Our values help form a significant part of our identity. They are what makes us our authentic selves and gives us a sense of meaning and purpose in life. The decisions we make are a direct reflection of our values and what choices we will make, right or wrong.
