Questions 1. Read the following paragraph. Identify areas where the manager could have taken more effective action to promote emotional wellbeing. Sarah’s manager noticed she was becoming more irritable in the office, but decided to see if the behaviour went away on its own. After a few weeks, she came to him and said she thought she had stress. Not knowing what the symptoms were, he told her she was probably just tired and to take some holiday time. Soon after that, she went off sick with stress. Answer He should have implemented support processes to manage stress and improve well - being. Structured debrief sessions to prevent emotional trauma following potentially harmful incidents. They need to provide leadership or management to others, peer- to-peer support and refer colleagues to specialised support services in line with organisation guidelines. There are likely to be slipping work standards, particularly if the person was previously a high performer who put a lot of pressure on themselves. A final sign is apathy or lack of interest in their work, Evaluations and performance reviews are also a good opportunity to discuss the person's recent work and invite them to share any problems. They may be reluctant to come forward with problems and need to emphasise they will not get into trouble. . 2. How may a person’s gender change their needs in the workplace? Answer There are many needs to be filled in the workplace e.g. expectant mothers can get paid leave from work when their child is due or they adopt. As women are more likely to be the main child carer in the family, and may therefore require flexible hours to drop off and pick up their children. Some organisations offer services like childcare for the children of their employees. This would prevent time apart and lead to a more relaxed enviroment at work. 3. What professional and personal performance standards apply to you in your role? Answer Performance standards can help to monitor employee's well- being and stress levels. Work standards are usually one of the first things to suffer when the employee's well - being declines. Professional standards will vary accordingly to the workplace, role and individual. Performance standards may include: Being polite and respectful to others, Arriving at work on time, Not raising inappropriate topics, Keeping a suitable appearance and hygiene levels 4. Imagine a scenario where one employee has threatened another in the workplace. How would you plan and prepare for the debriefing? Answer A debriefing is a discussion which takes place after an event.
