Privacy Magazine Class Activity Please insert the text of your magazine article draft on the following page(s): Location Privacy Introduction: In the illustration above you can see how so many people are having their location data tracked so having the option to protect it can save millions of people that can be susceptible to tracking and other harmful actions. Background: Location privacy is defined as the right of an individual to decide how, when, and for which purposes their location information can be released. Location-based services, also known as LBS, are services in our devices that determine the location and collect location data and user tracking data. These services include GPS, Wi-Fi, RFID, and others that use geolocation to determine the exact location of a device. Device location information is used to locate nearby stores, promote marketing for nearby businesses, travel information, fraud protection, and much more. Though if there is a lack of location privacy, there are certain dangers. One example is unsolicited advertising, this is where a person’s location is exploited without consent, and they are provided with ads of products/services near their location. It could also put someone’s safety in danger, as there could be hackers that can track their exact location. Technology Benefits: Being able to track one's location on a technology base benefits everyone. Having someone's location can be dangerous, depending on the intent of someone's mind. The technology industry believes that location tracking on mobile data improves local marketing strategies. Location-based service can give you estimates of weather and accurate time or traffic updates. Sharing locations is either for safety, keeping track of loved ones, or transportation, such as Uber or Door dash. Parents can keep track of their children and friends can keep track of each other. Ethical issues involved: A lot of people value the aspect of privacy which is why a decent number of technology users opt to keep their location private to themselves and those they allow or rarely use it. Some problems that arise when dealing with the argument of location privacy are how it may be used. People fear the government tracking them and many believe that they use the information they
gain to build profiles for each individual. In some cases, they have the legal authority to do so without a warrant. Another issue that is put into perspective is in connection to civil unrest instances where governments in other countries who see democracy as a concept can look for people, (combined with visual footage), they can see who was at these protests and who was not which can lead to people getting arrested. Recommendations: We believe a law should be passed that limits the ability of location data because of how easy it’s becoming to track individuals, it’s just a way to make people feel safe and not feel like their everyday activities are being tracked. Prioritizing the privacy of others should be the goal here.
