Report
1 A Look into Leadership Amy Rockhold MBA-FPX5002 – MBA Leadership April 25, 2023
2 A Look into Leadership This business report aims to analyze the results of three assessments that were taken to reveal strengths and skills related to my leadership qualities. I have also gathered insight from three peers in my personal and professional environments by asking a short series of questions. I am aware of my major strengths as they relate to my personal and professional lives, so I was interested in the findings of the assessments so I could further my knowledge and self-awareness in this area of my life. I discovered that people who know me and work with me hold me in a higher regard than I hold myself. I am aware of more of my weaknesses than I am of my strengths. This report has allowed me to reflect on myself and learn where I can positively change my personality. Assessments: My Strengths The three assessments I chose to take are Agile Leadership Self-Assessment, PRESence Assessment, and Total Leadership: Assess Your Skills. The Agile Leadership Self-Assessment evaluated my agility in learning, interpersonal skills, and execution (Capella University, 2023). I scored in the mid-range on all areas of the assessment. I scored mid-range in all areas because I am already a well-developed professional. I have been a natural leader most of my adult life; a lot of that leadership was learned by observing what people need. I have found that many people need a leader who doesn’t necessarily flaunt their leadership role. I am a leader who can hone in on a person’s weaknesses and help them improve their understanding of their role, responsibilities, and goals. I think I score in the mid-range on the assessment because I don’t feel a need to be outgoing in my approach to leadership, and I don’t have to seek out people to lead or prove myself as a leader. The PRESence Assessment revealed that I am solid in all areas of leadership except “expression,” which scored as an area of development. I have very mild reactions to just about everything, personally and professionally (Ariel Group, 2023). I am not very expressive, and if I need to express something, I usually do it one-on-one with the person or group; I do not see a need to react aggressively. The PRESence Assessment provided feedback on areas I could improve, which will be discussed later in this report. The Total Leadership: Assess Your Skills assessment showed that I am about average in every assessed area, except for being innovative (Friedman, 2023). The assessment did show that I am above average in weaving aspects of my life together, so I come together as one coherent whole person. I agree with this because I have always done what needs to be done to make positive things happen and stay on the right track. Feedback From Personal and Professional Peers I asked for feedback from professional peers and people in my personal life. I didn’t get many responses, but the three I received had similar reactions. I received responses from my landlord, a good friend, and a previous employer. My landlord told me I am at my best when working toward a goal. She often tasks me with dealing with anyone who must repair or improve my house. She mentioned that I was at my best when the air conditioning unit in my home went out. I communicated directly with the repair person and got the work done quickly and efficiently without involving my landlord. In this situation, my goal of getting the air conditioning fixed in the middle of a Florida summer was one that I couldn’t slack on. My good friend believes I am at
3 my best when being confident and optimistic, inspiring people around me. This friend recalled a time that he was going through a particularly rough patch in his life. He said I was always there to offer him a listening ear, encouragement, and advice any time he needed or asked for it. At times I would push him to take action to improve his situation, even if it was hard for him to do. He said I am driven to reach my goals and succeed when I need something done. My previous employer provided feedback that he appreciated how confident I am when I need to take charge of a situation to ensure it’s completed. I have worked with him through a few business transitions. If I see a report isn’t being done or someone isn’t doing a new process correctly, I take action to do the report myself while looking for a person to take on the task permanently or take someone aside and teach them what they need to know to do the work correctly. Leadership Statement My role as a leader is essential because I work to improve myself and the people around me, so we can all work towards being our best selves together. I do not strive for accolades, praise, or attention for my work as a leader; I only strive to be the best person I can be and hope to raise others along with me. As my peers and the assessments show, I am confident in my work and how I present myself as a person and a leader. Growth Opportunities The assessments show that I have a few areas where I could improve. The area of improvement that stands out to me is my expressiveness. I am known for being very neutral and bland. I will build people up with straightforward praise rather than gushing over them with great energy and excitement. I need to work on being more outgoing and enthusiastic when leading people. People often think I am trying to prove that I am smarter or harder working than others until they know me because I seem so serious. If I were more outgoing and cheerful regularly, I could bust right through the notion that I am not happy or excited to be a leader. I aim to combine my solid inner confidence and compassion for others into a person who outwardly conveys those values through an upbeat, outgoing personality. The assessment also determined that I am not innovative, which could be fixed by looking into new ways to be more expressive. My plan to become more comfortable expressing myself in a professional setting will be to ask my leadership to allow me to take over one of the weekly team meetings as the speaker/presenter. While leading those meetings, I will work on being more outgoing and enthusiastic during those professional gatherings. I plan to be mindful of how I react to situations and how I can be more expressive in my reactions. Conclusion I have learned about my leadership strengths and weaknesses by completing three leadership assessments and asking peers to assess my leadership skills. Some of the information I gathered was expected, such as my confidence and compassion. As a leader, I am confident in myself and my abilities. The assessments showed that I need to become more outwardly expressive, which I agree with. I plan to continue leading people by working together toward growth as a team and as individuals. I will speak with my leadership to create a plan to grow in leadership and show that I can be outgoing by leading team meetings when I can, hopefully weekly.
