DISCUSSION THREAD INTERNET ADDICTION 2 Discussion Thread: Internet Addiction Hi, Rosario I enjoyed reading your personal take on internet addiction and couldn’t agree with you more. I feel like finding balance between social media, the internet, and daily activities or routines is one of the most important things one could learn to master in life. Knowing when to turn it off could permit some many things, not just depression and anxiety but also self-doubt isolation. "There are countless benefits waiting for you once you decrease your screen time— perhaps the most crucial being more restful sleep," says Gloria Reilly, Health Services Coordinator at Lee Health. The internet can be a blessing and a curse, and I don’t think most people truly understand how damaging it can be to their emotional, mental, and even physical health if it gets extremely out of hand. In addition to that, I find it admirable that you can actually take care of business first and prioritize family. I am involved in youth ministry at my church, and I’ve had a few kids express to me that they sometimes feel unheard and unseen because of how invested their parents can be with their phones. Some of them are working, but again, knowing how and when to turn it off is essential. You mentioned that you’ve never struggled with an addiction, and that’s actually impressive. Being the time and age we're in, where almost everything we do involves technology, it can be so easy for one to abuse the internet. I suppose you maybe grew up during a time when social media and the internet wasn’t as big as it is today. A survey conducted in 2019 found that 40 percent of U.S. online users aged 18 to 22 reported feeling addicted to social media. Five percent of respondents from that age group admitted the statement "I am addicted to social media" ( Are You Addicted to Social Media? n.d.). Why do you think internet addiction is more common in the younger generations?
