1 Article Assignment #1 1) What was the purpose of the study? The purpose of the study was examine whether using fidget spinners during language arts centers would increase on-task behavior for three students with ADHD in general education classroom. Also to educate people on the use of fidget spinners for students with ADHD. In the article there were very detailed sections such as; methods, analysis, results, etc. 2) Why are fidget spinners used with students with ADHD? Fidget spinners are used with students with ADHD to allow then to move while completing assignments in the classroom. Previous research suggests that providing opportunities for movement facilitates on-task behavior for children with ADHD (Haranto et al., 2016). 3) What were the dependent and independent variables of this study? I would say that the dependent variables of the study would be prompting the students during the intervention. Why? Because the students have to adjust to using the fidget spinners while being on task rather than just focusing on the fidget. A independent variable of the study would be collecting data on the students using the fidgets and engaging in on task behavior.
2 Article Assignment #1 4) What type of research design was used for this study? A multiple-baseline design across students was used to determine whether each student had a higher level of on-task behavior using the fidget spinner (Carmouche et al., 2018). They would take data on if the students were paying attention by eye contact in class while using the fidget spinners. Data was also taken while the students didn’t have the fidgets. 5) Summarize the results of the study. The results of the study was determined on each session that the student was on task in the classroom. All three students baseline increased throughout the days of the intervention. After the intervention 2 out of 3 agreed that they liked the fidget spinners and that they helped them stay on task and complete more work. For 2 additional extra credit points, respond to the following: 6) What was one thing you learned or found of interest from reading this article? One thing that I learned while reading this article is that every intervention will not help every single person. These type of interventions are made to increase the amount of on task behavior in the classroom. I also learned that the intervention didn’t determine whether or not the students moved as much in class but, it did determine whether they were on task (Grodner,K 2015).
