Ted Tenhagen DAT-500-Q4409 Milestone 1: Data Analysis Plan First Impression The information on the spreadsheet looks like it was pulled from the HR database from a city or town since they would be the only ones who would employ both a fire department and police department. The information is extremely impersonal, since there are no names listed and the employees who match the information can only be identified by their employee numbers. Mean, Minimum, Maximum Firefighter Tab Total Salaries Total Compensation Mean $ 136,949.44 $ 173,389.87 Minimum $ 12.09 $ 12.27 Max $ 271,194.59 $ 316,195.42 Formulas used =AVERAGE(F2:F913) =AVERAGE(K2:K913) =MIN(F2:F913) =MIN(K2:K913) = MAX(F2:F913) =MAX(K2:K913) Police Tab Total Salaries Total Compensation Mean $ 85,235.16 $ 110,966.88 Minimum $ 0 $ 100.62 Max $ 239,217.97 $ 277,685.39 Formulas used =AVERAGE(F2:F890) =AVERAGE(K2:K890) =MIN(F2:F890) =MIN(K2:K890) = MAX(F2:F890) =MAX(K2:K890) Findings My reasoning for choosing the two columns that I did was because I was interested to see how much of the compensation the employees receive is from their salaries compared to their total compensation. I did not expect to see such a large discrepancy in the average salaries versus the maximum salaries. I am led to believe that both departments have various volunteer members who brings down the total average and would account for their being extremely low minimums. Once the information is sorted, I would be interested to see how many of these extreme top and bottom employees there are to see how much each extreme effects the results.
Next Steps The next steps that I would take would be to organize the data in 2 different ways. The first would be the organize the Employee Identifier numbers numerically so that someone looking at the data will be quickly able to find the employee number they are looking for just by scrolling. The second way that I would sort the data would be by the total compensation to see which employees are paid the most and which are paid the least, also showing how their income is allocated to them.
