Mod 8: Developing Partnerships 2 ~ Family Involvement and Parent Education Reflective Thinking Reflective Activity: My Beliefs For this activity, you will evaluate your own beliefs about parent education. Go back and reread the “Assumptions Underlying Parent Education” on pages 290-291 in your text. When you read these assumptions, think about which ones resonate with you and which ones are difficult or challenging for you to “assume”. Pretend you are developing a parent education program for your child care center or classroom, and you are going to “put feet to” to the assumptions. Complete the chart below by giving a specific example in the right-side column that details how you will show you believe that assumption. When you give an example in the right-side column, be sure it is an action that you could do in the classroom and/or school to show that you believe the assumption. The first one has been completed for you as an example. Assumption Underlying Parent Education What will this assumption look like in your parent education program? 1. Parents can learn. Since I believe that parents can learn, I will include parenting tips on my weekly classroom newsletter. I will also encourage parents to attend our school-wide family nights, which teach parents ways they can help their children learn at home. And, I will provide parenting articles and pamphlets in our family sitting area for parents to take with them. For each module you will have 2 Reflective Thinking activities to complete. The first will always be titled “Reflective Activity” (worth 5 points) and the second “My Reflections” (worth 10 points). Follow the directions below to complete the Reflective Activity and My Reflections. Save your work and upload to the Reflective Thinking Dropbox. Be sure to review the Grading Rubric for each activity (attached to the dropbox). ECED 2040
2. Parenting is an area in which a knowledge base exists pertaining to effective types of parent behavior. This one is difficult for me to assume and to come up with an example. 3. Knowledge alone is not sufficient to develop parenting competence. 4. All parents, no matter how well- educated, well-adjusted, or fortunate in their social and economic arrangements, need help with learning how to cope with the parenting role. 5. Parents want to learn. I believe that parents want to learn, therefore I will provide the parents with additional resources such as books, brochures, websites and community resources that could help them further understand what it is that they wanted to learn. 6. Parents learn best when the subject matter is closely related to them and their children. 7. Parents can often learn best from one another. I will hold group meetings for the parents and encourage them to share ideas on various topics. 8. Parents learn in their own way. My Reflections: (worth 10 points) Reflect on the module, looking back at the value for you!  First, review the Learning Outcomes and Key Words. Then, write about significant gains or learning that you acquired through the module learning resources and activities, and reflect on how this new information is meaningful and valuable to your current or future work with families and children. What have you learned? What do you find most valuable to you and why? What would you like to know more about? Complete this reflective activity by thinking about what you have learned and what the content means to your professional growth. You have three options for sharing your personal reflections: a Journal, a Wordle, or a Web. The instructions and samples for the three options are available on My Reflections Instructions, which is attached to the dropbox. Read about the three options. Select one of the three and complete your reflection. Submit it on this
document with your Reflective Activity. Be sure to review the grading rubric, also attached to the dropbox, before completing your activity. In the module, I learned about strategies that I could use to promote successful family involvement and parent education in childhood programs. I also learned more about teacher’s roles and parent education. I would like to learn about ways that I can involve parents in the classroom. This information will be helpful to me later when I am trying to involve the parents of students in the classroom. I want to learn more assumptions and about “putting feet to” to the assumptions, because this was honestly a confusing part of the lesson for me and I had the hardest time trying to put examples into the chart. I also learned a lot outside of this module with the Families Project about military families, and I also learned that I don’t really know as much as I thought I did about them.
