Unit Assessment Reflection Unit assessments have been helpful for me to evaluate the success of my lesson plan and make modifications to better suit my students' learning needs. Through assessments, I am able to identify areas where students are falling behind and work towards filling those gaps. Assessments are an ongoing process that helps me understand what my students know and are capable of. By collecting data and providing feedback, I am able to measure the extent of my students' learning. For example, with one of Mrs. Frances' ESL students, I focused on evaluating their progress through data collection and feedback by asking him questions and getting him to calibrate with a partner. Collected data The unit I taught was about George Washington for Presidents' Day. The students learned important facts about his life and opinions. To collect data, the students completed a KWL worksheet and shared important facts about George Washington with their partners and the whole class. I made sure that all the students participated and asked questions. I collected data to understand each student's understanding better by using writing prompts. My ELS student was able to do some activities while working with peers. Differentiating Assessment It has been demonstrated that differentiating assessment can be as effective as differentiating instruction, as it empowers students to demonstrate their understanding in various ways. This approach allows students to choose how they will show their knowledge, and enables teachers to collect data throughout the learning process. For instance, I provided my students
with options to take home a KWL chart, a timeline, and/or a storybook about George Washington. This allowed my ESL student to read a variety of texts and develop his understanding of them. He was able to adjust his spoken, written, and visual language effectively. Using differentiated assessments like this can provide all students with the opportunity to demonstrate their performance in multiple ways. Feedback It is necessary to acknowledge the individuality of every learner when providing feedback. Since every student has their own learning style, some may require more assistance than others. On the other hand, some may pick up ideas quicker than others. Supplying feedback quickly is helpful for students to make progress. In the case of my ELS student, task-level feedback helped enhance his communication skills by working in small groups. Immediate feedback was especially effective in improving her vocabulary skills and allowing him to utilize different strategies and techniques as he began writing. Art integration An art integration lesson is a curriculum approach that intentionally combines knowledge, perspectives, and inquiry methods from multiple subjects, giving students a more comprehensive understanding of a topic (Parker & Beck). Incorporating the arts into the curriculum can improve student engagement and raise academic achievement. To facilitate collaboration among students, I encouraged them to work together on team projects, which developed their leadership, decision-making, and communication skills. To integrate art into the lesson, I assigned students

to create a book after reading and viewing a PowerPoint presentation. They were tasked with drawing pictures and writing three important facts about George Washington. For my ESL and reading-challenged students, I provided assistance by helping them put together a book in the proper order and color the pictures. I also added classical music from George Washington's era to create a more immersive learning environment.
