Running head: STARBUCKS 1 Starbucks Shaina Caruso Grand Canyon University YOU DIDN’T LABEL THE PAPER PROPERLY. Author’s Note Introduction
STARBUCKS 2 Starbucks is considered one of the largest and most successful coffeehouse chains in the world (Peiper, 2023). Starbucks’s vision, mission and business practices have contributed to its success in the global coffee industry. The vision statement of the Company is to create a premier purveyor of the best coffee in the world whilst sustaining uncompromised principles as it expands (Peiper, 2023). On the other hand, the mission of the Company is to inspire and nurture the human spirit-one individual, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time (Peiper, 2023). Thus, the essay aims to analyze how the Christian worldview can affect the Company’s vision and mission statements, and business practices. Starbuck's vision and mission elements that reflect commitment to greater social good The first element of the Company’s mission that reflects its commitment to greater social good is to “inspire and nurture the human spirit.” This element concentrates on nurturing the human spirit and reflects the notion of caring for and upgrading the welfare of people. Particularly, the element of inspiring and nurturing the human spirit helps to ensure that emotionally unstable people are encouraged to gain emotional stability and spirit ideal for peaceful coexistence. The subsequent element of the mission statement: “one individual, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time” shows the Company’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of the community and togetherness. The element portrays that community members should focus on sharing Starbucks coffee at a time. For instance, the mission encourages stakeholders to care for poor people as it emphasizes the need for one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time suggesting that rich people should consider purchasing a cup for their poor neighbors who cannot afford.
STARBUCKS 3 Lastly, the vision statement element: “uncompromised principles” also promotes social good in the community as it emphasizes ethical business practices in places where the Company operates. Particularly, the principle of ensuring that coffee sold to the customers is of the finest quality helps to avoid detrimental health impacts on the community the Company operates (Jacobs & Finney, 2019). How elements of Starbucks’ vision and statements relate to a Christian worldview The mission to nurture the human spirit reflects Christian belief in human dignity. This mission echoes the Christian teaching in the book of Genesis that every individual was created in the likeness and image of God and needs to be treated with respect (Melé & Fontrodona, 2017). Particularly, the Christian belief that an individual should be supported to live a decent and respectable life in the community by encouraging them that they are equal before God irrespective of their cultural backgrounds. Additionally, the element of one individual, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time relates to Christian belief in fellowship. Particularly, Christians believe that Jesus shared a loaf of bread and two fish with His followers, and Starbucks’ mission encourages Christians to consider sharing a cup of coffee with their neighbors as they commune together (Melé & Fontrodona, 2017). Last but not least, the element of uncompromised principles relates to the case in the Bible of Anania and Saphira who displayed dishonesty and later faced the consequences of their dishonesty. Therefore, Starbucks’s vision emphasizes the Christian principles of honesty for the success of their business since the Company banks on the trust the customers have for their products. Since Anania and Saphira faced the death penalty for being dishonest, the Company’s vision tends to communicate that honesty pays as believed by Christians (Williams & Rangel-Buitrago, 2019). STARBUCKS 4 Starbucks’ social responsibility practices such as support of local communities, and diversity in Starbucks corporate roles are consistent with Christian belief in community care, and human dignity and equality before God (de Gruchy, 2018). For example, Starbucks initiated a community store program with a focus on supporting local and non-profit organizations in their effort to offer education and training to attain poverty eradication for minority groups in the community. The community store program resonates with the Christian worldview of community care as the program aims to improve the welfare of the minority groups in the local communities. Additionally, the practice of the Company to attain 100% pay equity in the United States for women men and individuals of all races for workers doing similar tasks is consistent with the Christian worldview of human dignity and equality before God (Williams & Rangel-Buitrago, 2019). However, it is significant to recognize that Starbucks just like some large Companies experiences criticism and challenges. For example, tax avoidance practices of the Company in the United Kingdom are perceived as not consistent with the Christian worldview of being honest (Williams & Rangel-Buitrago, 2019). Conclusion In conclusion, the vision and mission statements of Starbucks display its dedication to a greater social good which relates to elements of Christian worldview. Particularly, elements of the Company’s vision and mission statements such as nurturing the human spirit, caring for a person and neighbor, and sustaining uncompromised principles are consistent with a Christian worldview. For example, Starbucks’ practice of supporting local communities by educating and training people from minority groups is consistent with the Christian worldview of community care.
