Myron Robertson 29 October 2023 PHL 218 Global Ethic Framework Ethics is moral principles that govern a person's behavior or conduction of an activity. Ethics examines the rational justification for our moral judgments; it studies what is morally right or wrong, just or unjust. There are three levels of ethics: Personal, Professional, and Global. For this assignment, we will focus on professional and global ethics. When it comes to professional ethics, ethical responsibility may be subject to standards held by the chosen profession or associations. For instance, individuals in the medical field may be subject to responsibilities upheld by those in the medical field i.e., HIPPA, Insurance Fraud, and relevant consent forms. These professionals need to operate within a set pattern of behaviors to be considered in good standing, however, this also includes confidentiality, efficacy, operating in good faith, being impartial, giving full disclosure, and avoiding conflict of interests. Global ethics on the other hand is also known as the universal code of values or “the golden rule”. It is used to guide personal and professional ethics on a universal level. It pertains to issues affecting the world and focuses on actions taken by political leaders and citizens. This includes human rights being protected, genocide being unlawful, and treating others how you want to be treated. Ethical frameworks are perspectives useful for reasoning what course of action may provide the most moral outcome. In terms of professional and global ethics, I believe an ethical framework would be highly beneficial. There are a few principles that aid in ethical decision- making making which include but are not limited to virtue ethics (what is moral is what makes us the best person we could be), deontology (what is moral is what follows from absolute moral
duties), utilitarianism (what is morally right is what generates the best outcome for the largest number of people), rights-based ethics (what is moral is that which is in accord with everyone's rights), and care-based ethics (what is moral is that which promotes healthy relationships and the well-being of individuals and their interdependence). Often, we are faced with making morally correct decisions and these principles are used to assist in the decision-making process. This process is different for everyone, for instance, “Should you borrow a friend's car and return it with a full tank of gas?” something as simple as that will cause controversy but if the ethical framework is used most people can come to the most moral outcome. In the global management of climate change, an ethical framework is very beneficial. To tackle climate change and its negative impacts, world leaders at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris reached a breakthrough on 12 December 2015: the historic Paris Agreement. This agreement was a step forward to eliminate or substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2 degrees Celsius. Every five years there is a review of each country's commitment. I believe when this agreement was made the ethical framework was used to provide the most moral outcome. The principles were used to work collectively to reach success for climate control. As of today, 194 parties have joined the Paris Agreement.
