ANTH1000W Race: The Power of an Illusion 1. What point was the class on genetics trying to make for the students? The point that the class was trying to make based on the different genetics of the students is that even though they might think that genetic makeup may vary or be similar with certain students, it may not be true. 2. What was Richard Lewontin’s big discovery? How much genetic differences was there actually between what we call races. He finds that any difference between two individuals in the same race are just as much different from another race. 3. What’s the problem with attributing genes to complex behaviors? Attributing genes may form from geography rather than racial similarities. Complex behaviors arise from recent variations rather than genes because the transportation of genes have migrated over the course of 100,000 years and is only a blink of an eye compared to existence. In scientific terms, this is not a lot of time. 4. In what ways can race be said to exist? In what ways can it be said that it does not exist? Why is this distinction important? Race can be said to exist through classification of traits/features. It can attribute to discrimination or color separation rather than genetic differences. DNA and gene makeup can tell you that race does not exist. Where this distinction differs from your surroundings, attributing genes, and skin color. Race can be looked at as a racial construct in segregation, politics, and power. 5. In sum, what are the key reasons biological explanations fail to convince scientists that races exist? Key reasons why biological explanations fail to convince that races exist because most human variation can be found from any geographical locations or attributing features. It is striking when you can find similarities between races that we classify as different in genetic makeup.
