2 Planning Document Final Draft My issue: The issue I selected to research is GMO genetically modified organisms. I believe this is a issue that we as a society should look as we need to know what goes into our bodies and how does it effect us. Most people just eat when they are hungry not knowing what's in the food they eat. i would like to know if GMO contribute to the obesity problem or are they addictive all things we need to know. My question: What measures of testing, if any at all, do they conduct to make sure GMO's are unharmful and edible? My science resources: 1. How GMOs are regulated in the United States . This article explains how GMO's are regulated in the United states. It discusses what makes GMO's safe for people to eat. It talks about who makes sure GMO's are safe "multiple federal agencies work to ensure the safety of GMOs. Collaboration and coordination among these agencies help make sure food developers understand the importance of a safe food supply and the rules they need to follow when developing new products using genetic engineering"(Nutrition, 2023b). I find the part about how do i know i am eating GMO's very interesting and good info. 2. Will GMOs Hurt My Body? The Public’s Concerns and How Scientists Have Addressed Them This article discusses GMO's and there toxicity and tests that were done on rats. It goes into some details about toxicity over time and what to expect. It goes a little deeper and How GMO and the effects it will have on our offspring. "GMOs have been found to exhibit no toxicity, in
3 one generation or across many"(SITNFlash, 2021b). Its a strong argument for GMO health safety. 3. The Truth about Genetically Modified Food I chose this article because i wanted to look more into whether or not people and the environment will benefit from GMO's. It talks about the what potential benefits there are with GMO's and do they outweigh the potential risks. This source is credible as i recovered it from the school library. My audience and message: I would like to present my research of Genetically Modified Organisms to an audience of the Parents. Helping pass the the information I gather on about GMO's. I think it would be very beneficial for parents to become aware and understand any potential risks and benefits of GMO's when feeding their children. GMO's can be both harmful and beneficial so parents needs to be aware of these issues. " Children have a high exposure to GMOs . Children consume a large amount of products that may be genetically engineered. They eat a higher percentage of corn in their diet compared to adults, and allergic children often rely on corn as a source of protein. Mothers using cornstarch as a talc substitute on their children’s skin might also expose them via inhalation"(Gabe, 2022). We are only given one body and knowing what we put into it is very important. Identify principles: The principles of biochemistry and biology I think would be best to understand GMOs. GMO's are made by using the simplest lest of technique this involves using natural enzymes that are used to cut a gene or DNA fragment from one organism and then that is inserted it into another organism that is either indirectly through a form of vector, such as a virus, or for example,

Genetically modified foods contain molecules and proteins that have been chemically reformed to give foods more nutrients, a longer shelf life or even a better appearance. To make this to happen specific genes are inserted or removed from plants and animals (Rich & Warhol, 2018). Explain principles: These principles are relevant to my issue and question because I want my audience to understand what GMOs are and how and why they were developed. Genetic modification is done in a laboratory when a living organisms are manipulated. The rDNA techniques and genetic “engineering” will improve nutritional, flavor or storage properties, such as those with excellent pest and disease resistance or stress tolerance Celec et al. (2005). We need to keep the production of food and crops but that does not mean we need to genetically modify everything. My experimental question and hypothesis: Is the presence of GMOs dangerous in food? I believe that given appropriate regulation and continued resources into the presence of GMOs in food it should be possible to determine there are dangers when it comes to GMOs. Then be able to educate those who are interested in those concerns. My explanation: To determine weather GMOs are harmful natural scientists could collect evidence to help show how GMO's are not harmful in foods. Then by staying up on research they can make new laws that would have food companies have to monitor what is being added to food and then submit quarterly reports.
