Lab 08 Data Name: Raven Chalmers IMPORTANT: I would like to say that the name of the flowers I had initially planted was incorrect. My boyfriend’s brother gave me the seeds for this project and the packet said they were Chinese Forget-Me-Nots, but as you’ll see in the picture, they were indeed not. They were carnation seeds that he had put in the empty forget- me-not packet and I was not aware of this until they grew. He had labeled the packet but I didn’t see the marker. I just thought I’d let you know ? WEIGHT OF EACH CUP: Cup 1: 102.6 grams, Cup 2: 90.55 grams 1. Insert an image of your two plant cups here (be sure each cup is clearly labeled): 2. Germination:
a. What percentage of seeds from cup 1 sprouted (refer back to lab 4 data if needed): 33% (I had two sprouts but one died early on and I wasn’t able to keep it alive) b. What percentage of seeds from cup 2 sprouted (refer back to lab 4 data if needed): 33% c. Was there a significant difference (more than 10%) in germination (sprouting) between these two cups? Initially yes, cup one would have had a 34% difference from cup two but the second sprout didn’t make it. Given how they are now, there is not a significant difference other than that the carnation in cup one bloomed more. 3. Height a. What was the height of the tallest sprout (regardless of cup)? 5.51cm b. What was the percentage height for the tallest sprout of cup 1 (to do this take the height of the tallest sprout of cup 1 divided by your answer for 3a, then multiply by 100. If your cup 1 has the tallest sprout then this number will be 100%): 100% c. What was the percentage height for the tallest sprout of cup 2 (take the tallest sprout from cup 2 divided by your answer from 3a, then multiply by 100. If there are no sprouts, this number will be 0 as 0 divided by any number is 0): 81% d. Is there a significant difference (more than 10%) between the height of the sprouts from these two cups? Yes. Cup 1 has a 19% difference in height from Cup 2 4. pH
a. What was the general pH cup 1 subjected to (neutral, acidic, or basic)? Neutral b. What was the general pH cup 2 subjected to (neutral, acidic, or basic)? Acidic c. Do plant enzymes work better in a neutral or acidic environment (think back to lab 4)? Plant enzymes generally work better in a neutral environment, although there are exceptions. 5. Summary: a. Briefly describe this experiment throughout the semester. What was your hypothesis? What was the variable? What were three controls (there should be more than three, I am asking you to name just three)? What were the methods used to collect data, and what were your results? How long did the experiment last? What was your conclusion? For this last one (the conclusion) be sure to re-state your hypothesis, use scientific terms (to the level of this class), and use numbers to support your conclusion. I hypothesized that the seeds in cup 1 were going to grow better than those in cup 2. The variable was what we watered the plants with. Cup one was to be watered with 10ml of water, cup 2 was to be watered with 2ml of vinegar and 8ml of water. There were many control variables in this experiment, but for the assignment, I will name 3: The amount of seeds was the same in both cups, as well as the sunlight they received, and the amount of soil in both cups. The experiment was about 14 weeks long.

My conclusion is that the seeds in cup 1 grew better than those in cup 2. The plant enzymes seemed to respond much better to an environment without any acidity in it. The flower in cup 1 grew faster and bloomed much better than the flower in cup 2. Cup one even had another seed attempt to sprout, and although it wilted and didn’t make it, cup 2 only was able to produce one flower.
